Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
This book, part of the "Dream Big: American Idol Superstars" series, focuses on the youngest-ever American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks. The book describes the teen's upbringing and family life, her experience on the popular TV show, and her rise to fame as a teen singing and acting sensation as a result of the show. While the life lessons a biography of a teenager can offer are limited, this book does an excellent job of highlighting the challenges Sparks faces both as a big girl working in an industry overly preoccupied with body size, and as a teenager who suddenly becomes famous overnight. Multiple quotes by Sparks scattered throughout the book serve as a charming reminder that while she may be famous, but she is still a kid. Many readers, especially girls, will identify with Sparks and enjoy reading about her Cinderella story. American Idol fans will also enjoy the inside look at the competition. Also included in the book are a detailed American Idol highlights timeline, a glossary, a list of resources, and a complete index. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp
