I first read this book to my older children when it was originally published. I've reread it a couple of time over the years as my younger children came along. Most recently, I revisited to book after seeing the movie For Greater Glory with Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria.
The story takes place in the 1920's with the Mexican Cristero War raging in the background. Like all of the other books in Behold Publications' Glory of America series, the main character is a child. In this case, Jose. In this way children can relate to the storyline and enjoy the book even more.
Jose Finds the King is historical fiction. So, not only is it an enjoyable read for children, they learn about history. Miguel Pro was a Jesuit priest who was martyred during the Cristero War in Mexico. It's not an easy subject to approach with children. It is made easier because we see Pro's story through the eyes of a child. While the movie For Greater Glory is too violent for children, you could share the story through this book.
Note that the author, Ann Ball, also wrote a book on Miguel Pro for adults. She did an excellent job in keeping her books historically correct.
I highly recommend Jose Finds the King for both families and schools.
