You don't even have to enjoy opera to appreciate the material contained on these two CDs, 44 recordings of arias by Joseph Schmidt committed to record between 1929 and 1937. Forget that they're from operas, or the work of classical composers, and just absorb the power, beauty, control, and expressiveness of the voice, as Schmidt offers songs and arias from across a century of music, from Franz Schubert to Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The two discs divide his repertoire between German, French, and Russian material on the first, and Italian with Puccini very well represented on the second. The remastering has polished up the sound considerably, and the only problem may be that one wants more when it is over -- a possibility that EMI has foreseen by issuing a two-CD volume two of Schmidt's recordings that is very nearly the equal of this set.
