Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-The charm of these very simple stories about a boy and his dog Josh lies in the illustrations. McLean's flowing lines sketch out the close relationship between the two and perfectly express Josh's floppy-eared, bounding playfulness. Unfortunately, the effect is marred by confusing placement of text within illustrations and several instances where the boy's face doesn't accurately reflect the narrative. For example, in Josh and Josh and the Monster, though the boy is supposedly whistling or singing, as implied by the musical notes in the air in front of him, his mouth is closed. The weakest of the four is Josh and Thumper, in which the dog and the boy search for a rabbit that may have eaten some flowers. There's not enough happening to sustain readers' interest, especially since the story relies on a wordless section that is hard to follow. Despite the weak plots and bland texts, the pictures in three of the books are reason enough to consider purchase for lap reading or beginning readers.-Diane Janoff, Queens Borough Public Library, NY Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
