Barnes & Noble - David McGee
American Idol 2 finalist and full-time U.S. Marine Josh Gracin is setting himself up for a solid career when he finishes his hitch in September 2004. His solo debut is a solid mainstream country-rock effort, and a splendid showcase for the artist's robust baritone voice, a most appealing instrument. Producer Marty Williams wraps Gracin's performances in expressive strings, big, booming drums, stinging lead guitars, and, for ballast, atmospheric acoustic guitar strumming; but the instrumental volleys don't overwhelm the singer, whose emotive readings resonate with deeply felt commitment.
Unsurprisingly, Gracin leans toward upbeat messages, as on the roiling instrumental assault of "Peace of Mind," which conjures the battered soul Gracin sings of, its triumphant roar also symbolizing the narrator's determination to make a better world for himself. Although "No One to Share the Blame" finds Gracin lamenting a bad breakup, he faces facts and owns up to his own shortcomings in a song that sounds like a blend of a '70s pop ballad and a boisterous Broadway show tune. Listen closely to the jubilant toe-tapper "I Would Look Good with You," and you'll hear a celebratory tale of new love laced with echoes of Beatlesque strings, a catchy dobro line snaking its way throughout, and discrete mandolin licks here and there. That leads almost without pause into a furious southern rocker, "Turn It Up," which is pure testosterone gusto concerning a guy and the hard-partyin' gal he picks up, fueled by blazing guitars and a stomping rhythm section. "Semper Fi" to this -- Josh Gracin is on duty in a big way. Atten-shun!
All Music Guide - Aaron Latham
With his all-American charm and loyal following, Josh Gracin defied predictions and criticisms to finish fourth in the second season of the phenomenally popular American Idol television program. As the only contestant to embrace country music, Gracin set himself apart and played to a built-in audience in a format that none of the other finalists were tapping. Released at a time when a slew of other Idolists were dropping their own discs, Gracin's decision to go country on his debut was a wise move, as it gave him the opportunity to stake a claim in an open field while the others were left fighting for a tiny piece of mainstream real estate. Teaming up with producer Marty Williams Rascal Flatts, Gracin mines the country-pop territory that butts up against property owned by artists like Lonestar, and although he hasn't found any golden nuggets like "Amazed," he does surface with a set of quality tunes that have a few gems among them. The hit single "I Want to Live" is the type of well-crafted composition that, with minor changes in the arrangement, could work as an adult contemporary song, a bombastic pop
ocker, or, in this case, a thundering country-pop tune dressed up with a fiddle and steel guitar. The moody "Wheels" is a dark tale of longing that drives the album forward right into the lightning-fast lyrics of the clever "Nothin' to Lose." Elsewhere, the disc has most of the ingredients that make a basic musical country stew, including big string-drenched ballads "Brass Bed", an annoyingly cute tune "I Would Look Good With You", a ballsy rocker "Turn It Up", and a patriotic tearjerker "The Other Little Soldier". Most of these songs are a bit bland and not quite as tasty as the urgent "Endless Helpless Hoping," but there is nothing that leaves a bad aftertaste. Much like he has done with Rascal Flatts, Marty Williams has designed a perfectly polished collection that suits Gracin's personality and vocals which have transferred to the recording studio quite well. There is nothing daring or adventurous in the music or with Gracin himself, but that's just fine. Considering all the hoopla and instant fame generated by the contest, it's remarkable that he was able to focus and record a consistent and pleasant debut. He may not have won the title, but Josh Gracin has recorded an album befitting an American country Idol.

American Idol Star Hits It Big

I watched him become well known on American Idol and I was sure to buy his new CD. I've been the owner of it since it came out and I love it. To those who don't like it are entitled to there own opinion but they just might not like country music. I've seen him perform live, met him twice and have listened to his CD over and over again. He's got a great voice and a great personality. His songs are great. I really can't decide which ones is my favorite but I love "Little Soldier". It talks about how a little boy watched his dad go into the army and how he was "the other little soldier in this war". It touched me deeply. I would have given this CD more than 5 stars but 5 is the maxium I could do. I can't wait to buy his upcoming CD's in the future.

    Cool

I'm not a very big country music fan, but the first time I heard Josh's first single, I want to live, I knew he was something. I don't like very many songs off this CD, but the songs that I like, I love. My absolute fav off this CD, is Nothin' to lose. I compare Josh to Mark Wills, lets see if he stays that good.

    Awesome CD

Josh Gracin has an amazing voice. His song "I Want to Live" off his first album hits right at home for many people. Believe it or not I did not watch American Idol 2, but actually starting enjoying his music right off the radio. The music on this cd stands out. Its a one of a kind cd. It is the type of cd that you can listen to the whole way through. I strongly suggest buying this cd.

    Must buy! Great!!

I listened to all the songs from beginning to end, before I bought the cd, and I couldn't stop listening. EVERY song is well written, well sung, and the MUSIC is the best to bike and walk on the treadmill to. That's my standard! If I can exercise to it...it's a big winner. Every song is great. Plus 90% of it is upbeat and FUN! To me it was enjoyable as Keith Urban, Toby Keith, and Jimmy Buffet. As far as some other contestants... I was disappointed by Clay's cd (please, don't hit me) the songs just didn't make sense and also dissapointed in Brad Cotter's new release (yawn!). Sony didn't do Brad ANY justice by watering down the music that he played so FANTASTIC live. When is the "LIVE" cd coming out? Where's the guitar? I'm so disappointed in what Sony did to Brad's cd. HOWEVER, I'm so utterly AMAZED by Josh! This cd made my summer! It's the best cd, I've bought in over a year! Congrats from Memphis via OHIO!!

    Excellent First Effort

This really is the genre for Josh Gracin. Good songs that really showcase his talent and clean vocal style make this album an excellent first effort. I think he will be around for quite a long time!

    YAWN!

This is a cd from a young man who has very obviously spent his life listening to Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw. Lots and lots of Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw. Unfortunately, there is much less here to indicate a fandom of Johnny Cash or Gram Parsons or even Alan Jackson. The result is a lackluster album full of exactly the kind of not-exactly country music that had overbloated the mainstream as of late. For all the Marine posturing and so-called twang (singing through ones nose is not the same thing) there is very little here to satiate a true country music fan.
