Following in the wake of the spectacular success of artists like Andrea Bocelli and Russell Watson, the ever-expanding genre of classical crossover music is set to embrace another rising star, Josh Groban. The 20-year-old baritone's debut CD, Josh Groban, artistically exceeds the industry's high expectations for this very young, remarkably self-possessed performer. Discovered by producer-songwriter David Foster, the handsome L.A. native has selected an eclectic mélange of classical and contemporary tunes that present his warm and robust voice in a variety of complimentary settings. Whether singing in Italian (the gorgeous "Alla luce dal sole" and "Un amore per sempre") or English (Don McLean's moving "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" and Richard Marx's dramatic "To Where You Are,") Groban imbues every note with a shimmering romantic glow. Eschewing the obvious, the versatile vocalist features top-drawer material by Linda Thompson ("You're Still You,") Albert Hammond ("Alejate,") and Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso") as well as J. S. Bach's lovely "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." But the highlight is Carol Bayer Sager's "The Prayer," a made-in-heaven duet with fellow wunderkind Charlotte Church, a partnership with a combined age that barely totals 35. Already touted by such celebrities as Sarah Brightman and Rosie O'Donnell, Josh Groban is a precocious and rare talent ready to explode.

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Producer, record executive, and songwriter David Foster has a long history of trying to wed commercial considerations to the lighter elements of pop music, and in young Josh Groban, whom he adopted as a protg in late 1998 when the singer was 17, he is trying to get in on the classical crossover market effectively occupied by the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, and Charlotte Church (who duets with Groban on "The Prayer" here). Groban has a rich voice that falls somewhere between a low tenor and a high baritone, and Foster has here crafted or commissioned music that will sound classical to the ears of non-classical fans, much of it with lyrics in Italian to complete the effect. "Gira con Me," for example, is a slow ballad that sounds like it may have escaped from a minor opera, but in fact was composed by Foster and songwriter/producer Walter Afanasieff (best-known for his work with Mariah Carey). Groban is also given some ballads in English, with songwriting credits that include such Southern California pop-meisters as Richard Marx, Albert Hammond, Carole Bayer Sager, and Foster's wife, Linda Thompson. The result is an ersatz classical crossover record that won't fool the experts but easily could find its way into households that welcome Celine Dion and other sub-operatic emoters of her ilk. Groban is certainly not to be blamed for taking his chances with Foster instead of staying in college or pursuing a classical career, and his first album is enjoyable even if it doesn't live up to its pretensions.

I can't express how much a joy it is to here such a wonderful voice. I was introduced to Josh Groban's music more than a year ago when he was featured on a Celine Deion televised concert(PBS if memory serves). Took me awhile to buy his CD's but now have several and want to finish making my collection current.

I haven't heard the album, but saw him on the Jay Leno show and absolutely fell in love ! He's a wonderful talent.

You heard him on Ally McBeal. Now, Josh Groban's long awaited inaugural release is coming. I've heard four of the cuts on-line and Josh continues to amaze me. His voice has the maturity far beyond his nineteen years. His phrasing shows emotion rarely evident in someone so young. Like Bocelli, Pavarotti? Listen to Josh Groban and become mezmerised by...THE VOICE!

Josh Groban has a talent far beyond his 19 years. His voice IS music. I first heard him sing as part of his character on an episode of Ally McBeal. You would never expect such a rich, emotion-filled voice to come from a tall, moderately-built, somewhat shy teenager. But the moment he begins to sing, you will stop what you are doing and cling to every note he sings. This is his first album but will definitely not be his last. He has a voice you will never tire of.

I heard Josh live last Easter with David Foster and they said then that they were working on this CD. I heard it tonight at B & N even though it won't be released until later today. He is wonderful. So much talent for a young man.

He's not exactly Justin Timberlake or Mark Hoppus of Blink 182, but he's the new heart throb that gives classical, soft rock and everything else under the sun a good name. It's amazing that someone so young could sound so mature. The come hither voice and heart melting lyrics gives Josh's album a very much deserved 5 stars!

A joy to the ears. What a talent to sing contempory, opera, salsa, and even classical Bach. Each track shows a different side of Josh. And he is only 20 years old!!! Wonderful plush arrangements.

Everything about Josh Groban's CD is beautiful; both the songs and his gorgeous voice. You will be completely mesmerized. The minute I heard his CD playing in the store, I had to have it. His singing will definitely stir your emotions....simply beautiful....

My daughter and I met Josh outside of a Sarah Brightman concert in Lowell, MA in 2000. We spoke to him for about 15 minutes and were impressed by his humility and sweetness. My daughter is an aspiring actress and singer and was moved not only by his talent, but also respected this young gentleman for his graciousness.

When I first saw Josh Groban on Ali McBeal I thought he was lip singing, but after seeing him again with Charlotte Church singing ''The Prayer'', a spiritual song, his voice has captured my heart. I believe Josh Groban has a gifted voice. Its full of passion and intensity the minute the first note is sung.

What an incredible voice for a 20 year-old. Hope to here more from him!

The only word I can use is ''incredible''. Josh has such a mesmerizing voice.

I don't like all the comparisons of josh to other tenors... He is such an amazing singer in a multitude of ways, and to compare him to anyone just detracts from his abilities. Buy this CD with a box of tissues, some chapstick and a candle. Trust me on this one.

Hearing Josh Grogan sing for the first time is like discovering Charlotte Church or Pavorotti. You want to call everyone you know and share.

The first time I heard Josh was on Ally McBeal and was literally brought to tears when he sang. I made it a point to see the repeat of that episode along with his return in a more recent episode with Tom Berenger. I am looking froward to his next cd with much anticipation. He can sing for me anytime!

Josh Groban has such natural qualities unbeatable by even some of the best established talents. I do truly hope that he drifts farther away from the pop scene, and stays in the classics where his talents are best displayed.

I have never been so moved by anyone the way I have been moved to tears by this exceptional young man.

This man has an incredible talent. Thanks to the producers of Ally McBeal for introducing Josh to the public. His voice is inspirational. Like the male version of Celine Dion.
