Overview

Following in the wake of the spectacular success of artists like Andrea Bocelli and Russell Watson, the ever-expanding genre of classical crossover music is set to embrace another rising star, Josh Groban. The 20-year-old baritone's debut CD, Josh Groban, artistically exceeds the industry's high expectations for this very young, remarkably self-possessed performer. Discovered by producer-songwriter David Foster, the handsome L.A. native has selected an eclectic mélange of classical and contemporary tunes that present his warm and robust voice in a variety of complimentary settings. Whether singing in Italian (the gorgeous "Alla luce dal sole" and "Un amore per sempre") or English (Don McLean's moving "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" and Richard Marx's dramatic "To Where You Are,") Groban imbues every note with a shimmering romantic glow. Eschewing the obvious, the versatile vocalist features top-drawer material by Linda Thompson ("You're Still You,") Albert Hammond ("Alejate,") and Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso") as well as J. S. Bach's lovely "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." But the highlight is Carol Bayer Sager's "The Prayer," a made-in-heaven duet with fellow wunderkind Charlotte Church, a partnership with a combined age that barely totals 35. Already touted by such celebrities as Sarah Brightman and Rosie O'Donnell, Josh Groban is a precocious and rare talent ready to explode.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Producer, record executive, and songwriter David Foster has a long history of trying to wed commercial considerations to the lighter elements of pop music, and in young Josh Groban, whom he adopted as a protg in late 1998 when the singer was 17, he is trying to get in on the classical crossover market effectively occupied by the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, and Charlotte Church (who duets with Groban on "The Prayer" here). Groban has a rich voice that falls somewhere between a low tenor and a high baritone, and Foster has here crafted or commissioned music that will sound classical to the ears of non-classical fans, much of it with lyrics in Italian to complete the effect. "Gira con Me," for example, is a slow ballad that sounds like it may have escaped from a minor opera, but in fact was composed by Foster and songwriter/producer Walter Afanasieff (best-known for his work with Mariah Carey). Groban is also given some ballads in English, with songwriting credits that include such Southern California pop-meisters as Richard Marx, Albert Hammond, Carole Bayer Sager, and Foster's wife, Linda Thompson. The result is an ersatz classical crossover record that won't fool the experts but easily could find its way into households that welcome Celine Dion and other sub-operatic emoters of her ilk. Groban is certainly not to be blamed for taking his chances with Foster instead of staying in college or pursuing a classical career, and his first album is enjoyable even if it doesn't live up to its pretensions.

I can't express how much a joy it is to here such a wonderful voice. I was introduced to Josh Groban's music more than a year ago when he was featured on a Celine Deion televised concert(PBS if memory serves). Took me awhile to buy his CD's but now have several and want to finish making my collection current.

It's clear that Josh Groban has been trained in musical theatre by the discipline you hear in his singing. If you like rich baritone voices you'll enjoy this cd tremendously.

What an inspiration. I am truly blessed to hear such an angel from God. In whatever language he sings I am moved with great emotion. Thanks Josh.

150 % genius. No other album or artist has had such an impact on me than Josh Groban has. It's so different from what you hear nowadays. It's refreshing and inspirational. I highly recommend this album to anyone who wants to get in touch with themselves.

This is a most refreshing and enjoyable listening experience. For someone so young, so much raw talent is rare. He sings with such ease and feeling that it reaches into the listener's heart and soul. I cannot imagine anyone choosing not to let it envelope the senses and take them away, possibly ''To Where You Are.''

Waited patiently (not) for Josh Groban's album...To Where You Are brings tears...each song takes you soaring with his voice...The Prayer was first released by Celine Dion and Andrea Botcelli...in this version, Josh is perfection...Charlotte Church not close...

Hearing Josh Grogan sing for the first time is like discovering Charlotte Church or Pavorotti. You want to call everyone you know and share.

I could listen to this cd over and over again. I saw Josh on the Oprah Winfrey show, but unfortunately missed his name. I went to the Oprah website and searched through all of the archived shows until I finally found his name. I've been listening to his music on his website ever since. Josh's voice is so powerful--it literally gives me goose bumps. My four year old son goes around the house now singing, "To Where You Are." It really is beautiful!

Incredible...is all I can say!

Josh's first album is so wonderful! Once I heard him on Charlotte Church's CD doing a duet, I went out and bought his CD. I was so amazed that THAT voice came out of him. It's so amazing! I literally cried the first time I heard his version of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." He is just so talented and a cutie!

A (very) young singer with well developed abilities that raises the bar for others to match. Superb voice with expressive tones that everyone will find most enjoyable. His music does not wear off after it stops playing. An easy 5 stars. In a very short time, he will lead the field. Good bye privacy.

Josh Groban has a talent far beyond his 19 years. His voice IS music. I first heard him sing as part of his character on an episode of Ally McBeal. You would never expect such a rich, emotion-filled voice to come from a tall, moderately-built, somewhat shy teenager. But the moment he begins to sing, you will stop what you are doing and cling to every note he sings. This is his first album but will definitely not be his last. He has a voice you will never tire of.

I bought this c.d. right after it came out and have not stopped listening to it since. All of the songs are great, and some of them have even taken opera to a new level, pairing it with a good beat and great lyrics (and incredibly sexy voice ;-) ) A definate must have.

When I listen to Josh's songs all my stress dissapears. I saw his album at Target and bought it knowing that I don't have enough money left until my next payday.

I have grown to appreciate opera and classical music! I may be only 16 but I know major talent when I hear it! I love his voice and I am aspiring to do the same thing! His voice and power brings me to tears! Just because I am a guy doesnt mean im not sensitive! :-) Definately buy this album! Dont think of it as being partially foreign....think of the talent and hard work he puts into this! Not to mention the emotion! DEFINATE 5 STARS!!!

Josh Groban has a beautiful voice--a cross between Placido Domingo and Boccelli. Every song on the CD is great. Groban is very versatile. Don't miss out!
