Sandra frra. illus. by Pauline Rodriguez Howard. unpaged. CIP. Pi-ata. 2000. Tr $14.95. ISBN 1-55885-306-5. LC 00-035604. ~ K-Gr 2-This simple, nostalgic story evokes a picture of cross-generational family love. An evening on the porch enjoying cold watermelon with his children and grandchildren reminds Abuelo of how the same fruit served to introduce him to his wife. The story is both touching and amusing, the children like it, and then, watermelon gone and evening deepening, the grandparents go home. Detailed, rose-toned pastel illustrations enhance the sense of warmth and closeness. Each page of text is split by small inset illustrations of slices of the fruit in various stages of consumption. English text is above the inset, and a clear, fluent Spanish translation is below. Despite its slightly static nature, the story will enhance social studies units dealing with family. This book is similar in its quiet tone and sense of warmth to Florence Parry Heide's T'o Armando (Lothrop, 1998), and can be used as an extension to Carmen Lomas Garza's excellent Family Pictures/Cuadros de familia (Children's Book Press, 1990).-Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
