Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreSThese titles are characteristic of Johnson's earlier books in their emphasis on warm, loving relationships in an African American family. In Joshua by the Sea, a young boy enjoys a day at the beach with his family; in Joshua's Night Whispers, he seeks comfort from his father when he wakes up in the middle of the night; in Mama Bird, the child discovers a nest of baby birds with his sister; and in Rain Feet he splashes through puddles in a yellow slicker and boots. The pastel watercolor illustrations that fill each double-page spread are cozy and soothing, and the language is rhythmic and quietly reassuring. Solid choices to enhance any board-book collection.Emily Kutler, Summit Free Public Library, NJ

    Very, calming, comforting book

My 2 y.o. likes me to read this over and over. It is very short and easy to comprehend even though "night whispers" are not in her vocabulary. It is especially good for us because my daughter only wants me to put her to bed or greet her in the night when she wakes up - so if your child has a male parent that she resists as a caretaker at night this book gives a sweet example of a Dad comforting his child when he can't sleep. And I highly recommend that non-Black parents add as many books with African-American main characters as they can to start countering racism early by representing normal, healthy images and stories like this one!
