Overview

On March 10, 2008, as New Yorkers and admires around the world plunged into disillusionment at the shocking revelation that Governor Eliot Spitzer had been a client of a high-priced call girl service, one man's disillusion with Spitzer had already begun to disappear. The night before, Spitzer had told Lloyd Constantine, his Senior Advisor and mentor, what the world would soon learn about the Sheriff of Wall Street in a media storm of unprecedented intensity.

For Constantine, it was the end a "plague year" lasting 17 months, encompassing the tragic Spitzer administration and its flawed transition to power, which Constantine had chaired. Constantine instantly understood the root of all that had gone wrong, including Spitzer's constant battles with the legislature, the "Troopergate" scandal, and the plan to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens, which had spawned a national debate.

Convinced that Spitzer was rid of his demons, Constantine futilely battled for 61 hours to convince Spitzer to fight to remain governor and fulfill the promises made to the record majority who had sent him to Albany. Journal of the Plague Year chronicles those 61 hours, as well as the 17 months before and the month after Spitzer's resignation, when he and the author confronted their shattered careers.
