Overview

Think your life is dull? Think only eccentric, wild ladies qualify as journal keepers? Don't believe it. Use this lively workbook to plunge under the surface of routines and roam inner terrains. "You'll always have an interesting journal if you learn the art of listening to rocks," says the author, who's journaled for 47 years. Ms. Bellinger encourages women of all ages to use writing, doodling and downright scribbling for getting to know themselves. Her "lean in close" techniques brim with layers of self-discovery. "There's nothing better than finding a piece of your own truth," she says. This one-of-a kind guidebook views the personal journey from many angles, making every choice, every bend in the road, significant. In an age of fast-paced electronics, "Journaling for Women" offers a refreshing, handheld thoughtfulness. CINDY BELLINGER started writing the moment she could hold a pencil, and began keeping a diary when she was ten. A professional journalist for 30 years, Ms. Bellinger holds a BA in Creative Writing from California State University at Long Beach and a MA in Reading Education from the University of New Mexico. Loving diversity, she has taught ballet, waitressed in a truck stop, modeled nude for artists and tamed a wild horse. She lives in the mountains of Northern New Mexico.

    A journey of awareness

Journaling for Women will take you on a journey of awareness and insight into who you are, the complex you. As Ms Bellinger writes on page 47, 'Everything is made of layers' and that includes us. I've never kept a journal such as this, but do keep a diary of daily happenings, all rather mundane stuff, and a notebook of things of interest to me, but this book has reinforced what I already knew, although I had to read it twice to remember. One of the exercises she advocates is observing a rock, a flower, a branch for ten minutes or so a day I did that once, years ago. My choice was a daffodil, but I only concentrated on it for a short time, noting color, shadows, shape, etc., but even that limited time allows me now to see in my mind that lovely flower so clearly. I've recorded dreams, but not for years. I once had a big decision to make and saw the answer in a dream. Sometimes we get too involved in the daily stuff of life to notice what goes on within us, to keep ourselves attuned to that which nourishes our soul. This book has put me back on the path to awareness and beauty and the mysterious power of our minds. Read it once, turn off your censoring mind, read it again, and get yourself a notebook, a pen and begin your journey.
