From The CriticsReviewer: Kathleen Diane Pickrell, BSN, MSN (Indiana State University)
Description: This book is an overview of the life cycle from conception to old age to help healthcare providers in providing care to individuals throughout the life span.
Purpose: It is designed to assist students in their study of the life span by having a complete presentation of growth and development in one publication instead of in individual books. The book is worthwhile in that it gives a general overview to meet the author's objectives.
Audience: The intended audience, according to the authors, is healthcare students; there is not a more definitive audience identified. The book seems to be addressed to nursing students. Both authors hold graduate degrees and are affiliated with a practical nursing school. One author is a supervisor; the other one is a classroom/clinical instructor. The book may have been written to help students in this type of program with learning.
Features: The book begins with overviews of concepts common to each developmental stage, including lifestyles, culture, family, communication, and growth and developmental theories. Then, each developmental stage is presented from the prenatal period to late adulthood with milestones at each stage. Each chapter contains a list of learning objectives, a list of key terms, and a chapter summary at the end, followed by critical thinking exercises and multiple-choice questions. Appendixes focus on community resources, recommendations for health promotion including immunization schedule and appropriate screening at each developmental level. All photos and drawings are black and white. The book only provides a brief overview of growth and development. Detailed information must be obtained elsewhere.
Assessment: This is an acceptable publication for a quick, easy review of growth and development throughout the life span. There were two chapters added to this edition, one on culture and its influence on healthcare and one explores the communication process.
