Meet the Author

In spring 2002, Robert Stanek's first books, Keeper Martin's Tale and Elf Queen's Quest, appeared on bookshelves and become instant bestsellers, spending a combined 26 weeks on the Amazon.com Sci-Fi/Fantasy Top 50 list. These stories introduced readers to the fantasy world of Ruin Mist. The name "Ruin Mist" is the common language translation of an elvish word, which means "the lost ages". The stories of Ruin Mist are set in a fictional past of our world.

The popularity of the Ruin Mist books built up through the release of the subsequent books. Readers were taken with the magical realms, the grand adventures, and the combination of classic fantasy elements with a fresh, highly imaginative approach. In spring 2005, Robert Stanek's books were first published in audio and became instant audio bestsellers, spending more than 52 weeks on Audible.com's bestseller lists. In 2005, his book, The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches, eventually became one of the Top 100 all-time fiction bestsellers on Audible.com. The book was so popular, it was featured on the Audible.com home page throughout July and August 2005.

It's been a fairly open secret that Robert Stanek is the name of the more familiar bestselling author William Stanek. The main reason for using Robert Stanek for fiction and William Stanek for nonfiction was the astounding pace at which William Stanek produces books. With nearly 50 published books to his credit by 2002, he had many upcoming books waiting to be released by his current publishers, and was creating more and more fiction as a creative outlet to balance his work in nonfiction.

"I wanted to find audiences for both my nonfiction and my fiction. I love writing nonfiction works that help people learn how to do new things, but I also love writing fiction works that open new doorways to the imagination," explains Mr. Stanek. "The Ruin Mist books have been a part of who I am since I started them in the 1980s and they allowed me to create a magical realm with many levels of reality. I was overjoyed that I finally could share the realm and the books with others."

The Ruin Mist books have afforded Mr. Stanek an opportunity to explore relationships, family stories, epic sagas, myths, legends, and more. His books have been popular with fans both young and old.

    Ray's journey to the deep

Journey Beyond the Beyond is about a kid from a village who has to prove he is grown now by going out into the wilderness by himself. While he is there he must choose a life companion. The journey and the choosing, it is the tradition of his people. I liked this story a whole bunch.

Why kids AND adults should read the Magic Lands Series

Remember those times as a kid when you picked up a book and got lost in it? Well, this is such a book. I read Journey Beyond the Beyond a few years back and I was immediately drawn in to this truly magical story. This is a thrilling, edge-of-the seat read, even for an adult like me. You'll be swept away in an amazing world and desperatly desire to become part of this magical universe. Robert Stanek writes deftly as he tells the story of 13-year-old Ray who must journey to the place lost and deep to prove to himself and to his people that he is no longer a child. Ray's journey is a rite of passage, a trial that tests Ray's strength and courage. As soon as he sets out from his village he is set upon by Old Bull, a terrifying creature with human characteristics and traits. Old Bull chases and taunts Ray every step of the journey. The journey to the place lost and deep is only the beginning, however, for Ray's dreams--dreams the village elder warned Ray about--are taking him on a much longer, darker path. The imagery in Stanek's writing about this watery world filled with strange and wonderful creatures is deep and occassionaly dark. You can't help but worry about Ray and his safety as he faces the many perils along his journey. If you haven't discovered the worlds of Robert Stanek yet, you should. Here's why: 1. His books have imagination. Most books written for adults are seriously lacking in both aspects. His books on the other hand have rich imagery, well-designed plots, and plenty for imagination to feast on. 2. His books have heart. The books have moral, life, and relationship lessons that are meaningful. The characters show courage, bravery, heroism, loyalty, compassion. You don't feel like you're being preached to because the writing is mature and the subjects are approached in a way that is part of the story, part of the world he creates. 3. His books are Fun with a capital F! They're fairly easy reads that you can pick up and completely lose yourself in. They're great escapes from daily life and from 'heavy' literature. With series like, The Kingdoms and the Elves, and In the Service of Dragons, the books get better and better as the series progresses. 4. His books are incredibly good. We all need a little magic in our lives, and his books provide that. It's good to feel like a kid again, and for younger readers it's great to find an author that doesn't talk down to his readers. His books are written in a way that is equally adult-friendly and young people-friendly.

The imagery in Stanek's writing about this watery world filled with strange and wonderful creatures is deep and occassionaly dark. You can't help but worry about Ray and his safety as he faces the many perils along his journey. I was equally impressed by the illustrations throughout this over-sized book. The intricately detailed cover illustration shows Ray leaving his home village, leaving behind his friends Isaac, Tall, Ephramme, and Keene. The back cover has a detailed illustration of Ray battling a large bull. Throughout the book there are amazingly detailed illustrations as well. If you haven't discovered the worlds of Robert Stanek yet, you should. Here's why: 1. His books have imagination. Most books written for adults are seriously lacking in both aspects. Journey beyond the beyond

Journey Beyond the Beyond is on the best books that I ever read. Ray is a 13 year old boy who is very adventurous. One day he has to leave his village to prove himself, as soon as he leaves the giant bull is after him and he has to run for his life. He's trying to reach the place lost and deep and make his choosing to become a man. After a while, to Rays¿s surprise, the bull catches up with him and there's a terrible fight. Will Ray make it through to the place lost and deep? Will he ever catch and get revenge on the giant bull? Or will he be lost in the wilds forever? Read Journey Beyond the Beyond to find out. Recommended for all readers who have a passion about adventurous books.

    Journey Beyond the Beyond

After seeing such positive reviews I was willing to give this title a chance even though it has a very short length. After getting over half way through (around 3/4s) I couldn't finish it. There is only one character in the book adn I coldn't get attached to him since he was not at all fleshed out. If you want some real fantasy books try Robert Jordan or George RR Martin where you actually learn about and care about the characters.

    Journey Beyond the Beyond

Nothing really happens in the entire book. Very weird use of language - as if the author is straining to be poetic, but it comes across as a very bad translation into engligh from a foriegn language. It is more like an outline than an acutal novel - many scences are not very well well described and hard to visulize.

    Journey Beyond the Beyond

It has no plot. I often had no idea what was really going on. I finished it, but kept on thinking 'this surely must be some sort of joke?'

    Journey Beyond the Beyond

This book needs a serious re-write. The story might be ok, but the writing is written in such a way that you can't follow the plot.

    On our summer reading list

Magic Lands Journey Beyond the Beyond is highlighted reading on our summer reading list. I've read this book outloud to my third graders. They were wide-eyed the entire reading. The author, Robert Stanek, was one of three author's selected by our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students as Author of the Year, and is scheduled to speak at our school. I can't say enough good things about this book and Stanek's others. Read this book aloud to an 8-year old and you'll know why. What a wonderful wonderful book for children ages 8 - 12! Highly suggested reading, especially for parents who want to read along with their kids.

Best Children's Book In Many Years

Magic Lands was picked at our reading club as Book of the Year! All eighteen of us give Magic Lands our highest recommendation. Magic Lands stands heads and shoulders above all the other children's fantasy books published this year. Stanek's story is amazing! You start into it and you forget that it is written for 8-12 year olds and simply get swept away. Before I knew it, I was on the last page! I went back and read the book again the next day. Read Magic Lands, you won't be sorry.

    The next Harry Potter

My 8 year old son is a huge Robert Stanek fan so we had to get this. Magic Lands is the story of Ray and Kerry. Ray is one of the most likeable fellows you'll ever read about. His story draws you in instantly. Full of magical destinations like the land where the ground doesn't tremble beneath your feet, the place lost and deep, the land beyond the hill. Full of magical creatures the bull, the slither, the falkish. I loved the scenes with Old Bull. After my son and I read this we were both cheering Ray on.
