This is a very eye opening and informative book. If you know nothing about Deaf culture or that it even existed, this is the place to start. The book is intended for people who know nothing about the Deaf, their history, what they have gone through, and what they are about. If you're clueless start here. My only complaint against this book is one I've had with other books about Deaf culture--it comes across as *almost* hostile towards hearing people. Although, I understand the Deaf community has suffered greatly from oppression and abuse for thousands of years. However, I would think a more welcoming approach should have been taken. If you're reading this book you are making an attempt to fight the ignorance and I feel as if they were less inviting of this than it should have been. There will be a few times in this book where you will be upset or even angry. Keep an open mind and understand where the authors are coming from. Also realize that much of the Deaf community in America is very welcoming to hearing people who are trying to honestly learn about them and their culture. Respect them and most of them will respect you.
