Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
"Solar" means having to do with the sun. The book begins with information about the sun and the solar system, and then continues to explain when people first started exploring this celestial area. The five chapters include: "The Solar Neighborhood," "Observing the Skies," "Exploring the Inner Solar System," "Exploring the Outer Solar System," and "The Journey Continues." A timeline, factual sidebars, and archival and contemporary photos all complement the text. These features help elementary school students interpret information about the Starship initiative. This material greatly enhances the readability and subsequent comprehension of each respective topic in "The Dr. Jemison and 100 Year Starship" series. Elementary school readers receive a solid overview of NASA's space exploration program, with details about the technology involved in these endeavors. A "Studying the Sun from Space" section shows the instruments involved in this endeavor. The "Solar Probe" series of missions begun in 2010 will continue well into the future. "True Statistics" provide scientific facts about the sun. A list of books and websites for further information is included, as is a list of important words. An index affords easy navigation through the text. The "About the Authors" passage explains that Dr. Jemison is leading 100 Year Starship (100YSS). Dana Meachen Rau has published other books in history, science, and cooking. Additional books in "The Dr. Jemison and 100 Year Starship" series include: The 100 Year Starship, Discovering New Planets, and Exploring Our Sun. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
