Kolodner's virtuosic touch on the hammered dulcimer, combined with former Scottish fiddle champion Baker's joyful playing, give this album an understated brilliance. From the opening track Caspian's Return (Caspian being the family dog) these performances sing with soulful passion and sizzling, tap-your-feet grooves. My particular favorite is a set that includes Lady of the Lake, Farewell Trion, and a version of Shannondoah Falls that bubbles over with kinetic energy, due in part to Kolodner's creative use of dampers on his instrument. Both performers play fiddle, and their track with Mike in the Wilderness and Red Bird shows just some of the lovely twin-fiddling they do. Laura Risk and Robin Bullock, with whom Kolodner formed the Celtic-flavor ensemble Greenfire, lend their talents on fiddle, guitar and mandolin, and Paddy League plays guitar on other tracks. The chemistry is obvious! None of the selections are tired standards. The album is at once beautiful and energizing. I'm hoping these two do another one before long.
