Children's LiteratureThe "Starters" series is designed to introduce very young readers to topics of interest presented in a simple and direct way. Journeys looks at all the reasons (vacations, school, the beach) and ways (on foot, by bike, car, plane, train, and boat) that people travel. There are tips on what to pack for a trip that include things like a map, a snack, sunglasses, a camera, and a suitcase for those long journeys. Text is simple and uncluttered but younger readers will still need help in decoding much of it. The bright, clear photos on colorful pages make this visually appealing and encourage browsing. A glossary and table of contents is an added feature that will be useful in a classroom curriculum that stresses the use of these parts of a book in their literacy strands. Not a necessary first purchase but a nice addition where schools and public libraries have funds. 2004, Hodder Children's Books, Ages 5 to 8.
