Joy: A Christmas Collection

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Considering how much of a mainstay this group has become on the Christian pop scene in recent years, it's a bit of a surprise that Avalon has never issued a Christmas collection - usually a must for top Christian sellers. That oversight has been rectified with the release of Joy, a, well, joyful collection featuring 10 new and old holiday favorites. As with all things Avalon, Joy is characterized by smooth harmonies and powerhouse pop vocals. Ballads like the gentle "Light a Candle" and heartfelt "We Are the Reason" are less seasonal and could easily extend this album's shelf life beyond the holidays. But with uber-producer Brown Bannister Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith at ...

Ballads like the gentle "Light a Candle" and heartfelt "We Are the Reason" are less seasonal and could easily extend this album's shelf life beyond the holidays. But with uber-producer Brown Bannister Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith at the board, there are plenty of Christmasy touches as well. The luxuriously layered vocals of "Good News," a tender piece blessed with a gorgeous melody, shows these singers at their best, blending beautiful voices, emotive performances, and exquisite arrangements with a mix of classical and contemporary touches. The souped-up jazz of "Winter Wonderland" is the lightest offering here, while two groups of favorite carols -- an angels medley and manger medley -- demonstrate a knack for effortlessly combining divergent material into a seamless whole. All in all, a joyous contribution to the holiday heap.
All Music Guide - Dacia A. Blodgett-Williams
Popular CCM quartet Avalon doesn't disappoint with their first offering for the holiday season. A collection of ten songs celebrating Christmas, Joy leaves the listener feeling joyful, uplifted, energized yet reverent about the reason for the season. The opening and title song, a jazzed-up fantasy on "Joy to the World," gets the toes tapping and the mood continues until the slightly more reflective third track "Don't Save It All for Christmas Day." Choirs were rounded up for background vocal support on several tracks, the most outstanding of which is "Good News" during which the basses are wonderfully strong and mesmerizing. The quartet also covers a handful of songs written or made famous by other artists and, again, no disappointment in their performance on all. One interesting note: The album design has a definite retro feel, à la '60s and '70s, yet the music is clearly recorded in 2000, a fun juxtaposition. A worthy addition to the fan's collection, as well as the holiday music aficionado's collection.

    Awesome Album

I enjoy Avalon's stuff very much. They one of my favorite groups. They're even more spectacular in concert. This album was one of their very best. I got it a couple days after christmas last year because that was when I first heard about it. It's a very good album. I usually don't like it when artists change old christmas classics and mess them up (Stacie Orrico is a good example of this) but I really enjoyed many of the old christmas classics on this album even though they were a little bit more poppy. The only thing I didn't like is when they mixed up a bunch of carols together on one of of the tracks. A bunch of my favorite carols got chopped off. But otherwise this is a great album. It's very worth it.

    Avalon's ''Joy''

Avalon takes new heights with their first Christmas album intitled, ''Joy''. ''Joy'' features some of the well-known carols and medleys but also other Christmas songs that aren't as well known. The energetic first track ''Joy'' (''Joy to the World'') will have you moving your feet in seconds with its upbeat rhythm and powerful vocals. ''The Angels Medley'' starts out with slowly ''The First Noel,'' but speeds up as ''Angels We Have Heard On High'' and ''Hark the Herald Angels Sing'' are added. Jody McBrayer takes lead on ''Don't Save it All For Christmas Day'', originally sung by Celine Dion. Soprano Cherie Paliotta goes solo on a beautiful ''Jesus Born On This Day'' rendition. The next song with have you snapping your fingers and singing along! ''Winter Wonderland'' has a nice swing beat to it with lovely harmony by all four members. ''Light A Candle'' is a touching song encouraging others to ''light a candle'' for others. ''Good News'' hits home with a choir sound and its true message of ''good news''. ''The Christmas Song'', (''Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire'') will be perfect for Christmas Eve, with the soft but powerful vocals by Janna Long. ''Manger Medley'' features Janna singing the first verse of ''Away In a Manger''. Michael Passons does a slightly different version of ''O Little Town of Bethlehem'', while Jody sings ''Silent Night''. Cherie closes with the final verse of ''Away In a Manger.'' The final song ''We Are the Reason'' tells about the true Christmas story; Jesus dying on the cross to save sinners so that we could live. This album is my top Christmas album, and I highly recommend it!

This is the season for ''Joy''!!!

This is a great Christmas CD filled with traditional carols and new Christmas songs! It tells of the real meaning of Christmas with songs like ''Don't save it all for Christmas'', ''We are the reason'', and ''Joy to the world.'' And the way they put the carols together is awesome! The songs are beautiful and upbeat! If you don't have this CD, I highly recommend you get it!!!!
