Barnes & Noble - Suzanne McElfresh
With a special version of her own "Hands" and a batch of Christmas classics, Jewel gets in the spirit with Joy: A Holiday Collection. Not that this sort of musical fare is a stretch for the crystal-voiced Alaskan folk star. Tranquil seasonal selections like "Silent Night," "O Holy Night," and "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" echo the themes of faith, love, and hope she's explored on her pop releases, Pieces of You and Spirit. Here, Jewel layers her clear, soaring voice over quiet chamber orchestrations on time-honored holiday songs, including a reverent choral version of the traditional "Ave Maria," then delivers a spirited "Joy to the World," a playful "Rudolph the ...

Add to that a gospelized medley of "Go Tell It on the Mountain," her own "Life Uncommon," and the Bette Midler standard "From a Distance," and it's a Jewel of a collection, indeed.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Joy: A Holiday Collection may surprise some Jewel fans, since it isn't a warm, intimate acoustic album. Then again, it may not, since it arrives on the heels of the exquisitely produced, unabashedly pop Spirit, which had lush musical backdrops for her folk-pop tunes. Joy is a full-bodied expansion of Spirit, however -- an unashamed classicist Christmas album, featuring all of the usual carols delivered with strings and choirs. Because Jewel has a big, powerful, attractive voice, Joy works, even if it is a little too predictable for its own good -- the closing "Christmas Version" of "Hands" is the only true signal, musically at least, that this is a Jewel number. Surely, this holiday album isn't a major addition to her catalog, but for hardcore fans, it may be a nice stocking stuffer.

    My all-time favorite Christmas CD!

This is my all-time favorite Christmas CD. Along with family and friends who listened to it with me, we were amazed at Jewel's range -- you hear a side of her that you've never heard before! It is GREAT!!

    my favorite christmas album

8 years later and this is still my favorite christmas album. the arrangements of the traditional songs are warm and intimate, and she makes them her own without going overboard. my favorite on the album is actually the "christmas version" of hands, the way she really belts it out at the end is awesome. if you're a fan of jewel, this is a must have. and if you're a fan of christmas music, this will definitely fill your fancy. did i just say "fill your fancy?" wow. haha, just get the album!

    Beautiful

I really like Christmas carols at Christmas time and Jewel with her gorgeous voice didn't dissapoint. Hauntingly beautiful songs and a hauntingly beautiful voice to sing them, what could be better? If you like Christmas music this is the creme de la creme of albums.

A must-have for your christmas collection

I tried to listen to her cd as I wrapped gifts. Forget it, I couldn't pay attention to what I was wrapping! A wonderful collection of old and modern carols, Jewel has outdone herself in bringing us the feel of christmas. From her soaring lyrics in Ava Marie to her playful rendition of Rudolph, she brings "joy" to our holiday as well as to our hearts.

    quintessential holiday cd

i heard one of these songs on a radio station in my car last christmas and had chills and tears in my eyes. ave maria alone is worth the price of admission. Winter wonderland is delightfully refreshing with a slight touch of a yodel in it. This cd should be in everyones holiday collection. I still get gossebumps and tears each time i hear it. simply classically beautiful, jewel should get some sort of award for this christmas cd.

    beautiful

I bought this CD in hopes of finding some holiday music that wasn't completely cheesy, and am very happy that I selected this one. Jewel has an amazing voice, and her Ave Maria is absolutely haunting. I put in on repeat!

One of the BEST albums in my collection!

This album is enchanting...anyone who likes Jewel's work will enjoy this during the holidays! I play it at work (cozy coffee shop) and have had numerous people come up and ask who this is and where can they buy it. A treasure to add to your music collection.

    One of the Best!

Out of all of the other great 'pop' Christmas albums (Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, NSYNC, 98 Degrees, etc.) Jewel's is one of the best! She quite possibly has the most beautiful version ever of OH HOLY NIGHT! I never realized how beautiful her singing is! HANDS is incredible, I loved LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, and WINTER WONDERLAND, oh and all of the songs, really! Jewel's is really the perfect Christmas album for you if you live in a mountainy, snowy area like the one in the liner pictures (or anywhere else, really). It's really cozy, and it embodies the Christian Christmas spirit without being overly devout. Somehow it's just perfect! I loved it!!!!

    Fabulous!

I believe this is now my favorite holiday CD. She does a wonderful job of using her wonderful voice without ''showing it off'' like so many artists do. I actually get goose-bumps at some points during the CD. I highly recommend this CD, even if you aren't necessarily a Jewel ''fan.'' It's worth a listen.
