    Terrible Terrible Book

I have been learning sign language in highschool. My first teacher started teaching using this book. When she left and we had a deaf teacher the next year, he laughed at our horrible sign language. The signs are not only typically inaccurate but things that are accurate are from the 70's. If you enjoy talking a groovy neato way that all the hip chicks dig, go ahead and learn from this book.

    Dr. Riekehof is great!

The book is great, easy to learn from, very easy to understand. I learned Sign Language from Dr. Lottie Riekehof when she was one of the Deans at Galluadet University in Washington, DC. Her teaching was excellent, her book is a source I refer back to and have others that I have helped teach signs learn from. You truly will not waste your money on this book. It will really help you learn the art of Signing!!

    You have to start somewhere!!

Sign language is a living language- it changes just the same as English language. I'm not going to touch on dialects. I recommend this book as a starting point and then proceed from there. Perfect for everyday general use if your contacts with deaf is very low.

    Awful

I think it's it dosen't meet a deaf persons needs because it basically has no education with the deaf culture at all so don't use it!!!

Very inaccurate, injustice to the language

I teach advanced American Sign Language on the college level and also work as a full-time interpreter. From this experience I can say that the Joy of Signing book is nothing like the signing found in the real world. The book is extremely inaccurate and will leave the reader unable to communicate with Deaf people. In the Deaf Community this book is well known as one of the worst texts available.

    Very Easy to Pick UP!!

I sign just for fun, and to talk to a deaf girl at my school. This book was EXTRA easy to you as compared to many others... and I learned the signs very quickly! A+ !

    Best Book on Sign Language!!

I teach a Sign Language class yearly and I have looked at a lot of different books. This is the most clear, bigger illustrations and easier for my students to grasp.

    Bad Book

This book does not help you at all. It is very very brief. I totally sucks. If I could I would rate it negative stars!

    Outstanding book

My Sister and I learned sign language using this book on a driving trip from Missouri to Louisiana and back. Not only was it easy and extremely helpful, it was loads of fun! I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the second most used language in the world.

    Book well worth buying!

This is our class text book, and I haven't seen one this close to how the deaf communicate. I've purchased other books that had signs that were incorrect. My deaf friends agree with this book's illustations for ASL. A must have for learning!
