Overview

This book/CD-ROM package is a reference for professional engineers and academic researchers in the fields of communication, image processing, signal processing, information theory, and multimedia. It has specific applications for those involved in the development of software and hardware solutions for multimedia, Internet, and medical imaging applications and for those pursuing research in image and video compression. Part I provides background on image compression, and Part II describes the JPEG2000 standard. Part III is devoted to the implementation and exploitation of the standard, and contains guidelines, suggestions, and analyses for both software and hardware oriented applications. Part IV describes other key image compression standards. The CD-ROM contains documentation, binaries, and source code to the Kakadu software tools. The book can be used as a primary text for courses in image compression and multi-media compression. Taubman teaches electrical engineering and telecommunications at the University of New South Wales. Marcellin teaches electrical and computer engineering at The University of Arizona. Annotation c. Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
From the Reviews:
'JPEG2000 is more than an image compression standard, it is a whole new way to represent and interact with digital imagery. The standard provides the quality and flexibility required for modern imaging applications. No other authors have a more comprehensive and intuitive knowledge of JPEG2000 than Drs. Taubman and Marcellin.'
Martin Boliek, Editor, JPEG2000 Parts 1 and 2
'...the authors have produced a comprehensive book that covers a broad range of technologies and issues around wavelet compression. This book is a substantial contribution that fills the void between theory and the practice of JPEG2000. Although at times it's a bit too complex for the novice, this book should be considered as a mandatory companion to the JPEG2000 standard document for any serious practitioner of the standard.'
Journal of Electronic Imaging, April (2002):11(2)
