This book in the "Fact Finders" series describes the life and achievements of Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer. Chapter one, "Magic Waters," tells some of the stories about the Fountain of Youth, which Ponce de Leon supposedly was searching for when he found Florida. Chapter two, "A Spanish Beginning," explains Ponce de Leon life in Spain, including how he heard about Columbus's discovery of the New World and joined his second voyage. Chapter three, "The New World," describes Ponce de Leon's life on the island of Espanola as a soldier fighting the native people. Chapter four, "Puerto Rico and Beimeni," explains how Ponce de Leon became the governor of San Juan Bautista, but lost the position to Columbus's son and went north to Beimeni. Chapter five, "Florida," describes the discovery of Florida and of the Gulf Stream. Chapter six, "The Last Voyage," details Ponce de Leon's last journey to Florida and his death there. Numerous color illustrations, maps, a timeline, and a "Fast Facts" section all help make this book a great biography. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 8 up.—Amie Rose Rotruck
