Overview

In Jubal Sackett, the second generation of Louis L’Amour’s great American family pursues a destiny in the wilderness of a sprawling new land.

Jubal Sackett’s urge to explore drove him westward, and when a Natchez priest asks him to undertake a nearly impossible quest, Sackett ventures into the endless grassy plains the Indians call the Far Seeing Lands. He seeks a Natchez exploration party and its leader, Itchakomi. It is she who will rule her people when their aging chief dies, but first she must vanquish her rival, the arrogant warrior Kapata. Sackett’s quest will bring him danger from an implacable enemy . . . and show him a life—and a woman—worth dying for.

One of my favorite Louis L'Amour books!

I love this book. I remember my dad reading this to me as a little kid. I just re-read it and it totally stands up to the tests of time. It's got all of the classic L L'Amour elements. Wilderness, adventure, intrigue, good vs evil, man vs wild, and just a touch of romance. A must read. You won't be disappointed.

    Maybe, not so much....

The story went from a western to a science fiction story line. Too much going on in this one. Spanish conquistadors, revengeful indians a pet buffalo and finally an attacking mastodon??? Maybe the mummies in the cave should have sent the message,.."simplify your plot".

As always the action was vivid and detailed. I like Mr. L'amour's writing style, this story was just too unrealistic for me.

    I Also Recommend:

Jubal Sackett: another great Louis L'Amour story!

Jubal Sackett is another great early (very early) American tale.
It is a continuation of the early Sackett story.
It picks up as Jubal leaves to see the "shining mountains",
far beyond the "Far Blue Mountains" of his father.
Friendship, loyalty and eventually romance all enter into this tale.
The plot is relatively simple, but as usual with Louis L'Amour novels
it is in the telling that the story shines.
L'Amour could easily sit in a cabin or lodge in the winter and tell
    stories of past adventures. If one likes history or adventure I highly recommend this book. The early "Sackett" stories are among L'Amour's best;
recalling a time when this land was as wild and untamed as the people who
    inhabited it.

    more from this reviewer

    I LOVE THIS BOOK!

This is truly a book worth 2 THUMBS UP!!! This book is so captivating and intense. It puts you in time travel, opening your eyes to America's amazing past. I read this book in two days. I couldn't put this book down and it ended so well. It didn't leave you hanging wondering what happened to the characters. This book has made this genre my favorite, and I read everything now about frontier individuals, and Native Americans. Louis L'Amour and James Alexander Thom are amazing authors. TRULY A MUST READ!!!!

A feel for the wild country like never before!

If ever you wished to read THE beginning frontiers' story, this is the one you want. Jubal, the protagonist, explores the far western lands and meets endless surprises along the way. I just finished this book for the second time and enjoyed it even more. This is on the top 3 for L'Amour books, certainly my favorite of the well-known Sackett series. Faced with enemies, love of women and wandering, and huge wild game, Jubal proves his worth over and over again.

    Jubal Sackett Book Review

It was a great book to read. It was exciting and I could not put it down. Since Louis L'amour visits everywhere he rights about. The setting of this book is during the time when settlers were just moving west to find a place to settle down in. The west at the time was filled with woods, streams, and prairies. Jubal Sackett was the youngest son of his father, Barnabas Sackett, is determined to see what his father did not see. Through his journey Jubal meets many objections and conflicts. Two of the main ones are man against man and man against nature. Jubal has to battle against nature who tries to wear him down and send wild animals upon him. Jubal also makes many enemies. His most furious enemy is Kapata who is part of the Nachee tribe. He becomes Jubal's enemy because the Knkwan, the medicine man of the Nachee tribe, sends him to find the Nachee Princess, Itchakomi. Kapata thinks he should go after her because he wanted to marry Itchakomi. Jubal was just an explorer but he did the job for Knkwan. The characters of the book are very well rounded and have lots of different characteristics. Kapata is a fierce Indian who would do anything to get the power Itchakomi has. Jubal is an Englishman who is a wonderer and explorer. Jubal is also called a medican man by the indians. Itchakomi is a beautiful Indian Princess. This book is different from many other western books because the author goes to the places were he is writing a book about and does a lot of research. The book is also different because of the history. Louis L'amour does a great jog explaining and making the reader guess what comes next. He also has realistic details and a hopeful ending. If you like adventure, excitement and little bit of history and romance this is the book for you.

    Jubal Sackett Book Review

In the book Jubal Sackett, Louis Lamour writes an exciting tell of a wonderer named Jubal Sackett. This story is set in a time when the United States was first being explored. Jubal Sackett is the son of Barnabas Sackett, he also was an explorer, he has sent Jubal to see what he did not. In the story of Jubal Sackett there are many conflicts, there are conflicts of man against man and conflicts of man against nature. The main conflict is man against man, it is set between Jubal and Kapata. Jubal Sackett, ¿Jubal¿ is a wonder, an explorer how just wants to see the world. But he meets the Knkwan the medicine man of the Nachee tribe. Jubal is sent to find, Itchakomi, a princess of the Nachee tribe. The knkwan sends Jubal to give her a message, ¿That the sun of he tribe is dieing, the her father is dieing. ¿Kapata is the Indian that is supposed to take her for his wife. Kapata thinks that he should be the one to go find her. See Itchakomi is a sun, a ¿princess¿ and Kapata thinks that if he marries her that he will be very powerful. So Kapata has to find her before Jubal and Keokoatah find her. ¿Keokoatah is Jubal traveling companion, the met when they where both in the forest and they had tried to kill each other. Jubal had built a small fire and Keokotah came up and set down, Jubal offered him some food and they have been traveling together ever since. Although the story line is exciting and thrilling, Louis Lamour creates very complex characters. The characters are very colorful and very well rounded. For instance, Kapata is mad that the Knkwan for sending Jubal to find Itchakomi. But see Kapata is half Nachee and half Karwankawa, and in the Kawandkawa tribe the man is the boss. Kapata thinks that if he marries Itchakomi he will get her power. It does not work that way in the Nachee tribe, but he is to blind to see past his Karwnkawa was. The way the characters in the book act is on of the books many strong points. Another on of the books strong points is the history that is written is the book. For example the clothes they wear, the tool they uses, the things that are talked about in the book. Louis Lamour does a lot of research before writing a book and he puts a lot of research into the books that he writes. People should read this book because it is a great adventure of a man how just want to live in peace, but winds up making many friends and many enemies. This book is a page turner is hard to put down once you pick it up. If you like adventure, excitement and little bit of history this is the book for you.

    Fantastic

This was the one book which started me off on reading again. It was the first western I had read and consequently hasn't been the last. I love the style of Louis Lamour and found the characters in the book and the lives they lead to be easy reading with a wanting to know more about what was to happen next and my curiosity being fulfilled with a great story.I thorouly recommend this book to any fan of Louis Lamour ( especially his Sackett novels) or indeed this makes for an enjoyable read for those who have never read a western yet.
