Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Rofofsky Marcus
Part of the "World Religions" series, this book is separated into five chapters about the Jewish religion: Flights to Freedom, Founders and Beliefs, Sacred Texts and Rituals, From Diaspora to Return, and Judaism Today. The volume also includes a brief timeline, a set of Did You Know? facts, a glossary, and a brief list of both fiction and non-fiction suggested readings. Written by an award-winning author of more than 100 publications, the book includes photographs, maps, and illustrations that give visual appeal to the pages. It can be hard to flip to a desired piece of information, however, as the book is not organized chronologically or topically from chapter to chapter. This secularly-oriented book contains generally correct information although the information provided is not applicable to all sects of Judaism and can be very misleading, particularly the areas on the job description of a rabbi and the preparation for Jewish adulthood. The sections about Flights to Freedom, the rescue of Ethiopian Jews, and Judaism today are most accurate, while the other sections need further clarification to ensure misinformation is not perpetuated. School Library Journal
Gr 4-8–These books open with a significant, current news story involving the respective religion, a mode of introduction that serves to ground in the present ideas whose origins date to antiquity. The other chapters cover not only the origins of the faiths and their beliefs, but also examine day-to-day life, festivals, and political and social issues that have affected followers over time. The colorful, attractive layout includes high-quality reproductions of photographs, maps, and paintings. Students who are new to religious studies, as well as those doing reports, will find that this series meets their needs.
