Biography

James Patterson had been working as a very successful advertising copywriter when he decided to put his Masters degree in English to a somewhat different use. Inspired by bestselling hair-raising thrillers like The Day of the Jackal and The Exorcist, Patterson went to work on his first novel. Published in 1976, The Thomas Berryman Number established him as a writer of tightly constructed mysteries that move forward with the velocity of a bullet. For his startling debut, Patterson was awarded the prestigious Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel—an auspicious beginning to one of the most successful careers in publishing.

A string of gripping standalone mysteries followed, but it was the 1992 release of Along Came a Spider that elevated Patterson to superstar status. Chapter One

MY NAME IS NICK PELLISANTE, and this is where it started for me, one summer out on Long Island at "the wedding of weddings." I was watching the bride celebrating at the head of the dance line as it festively wound through the tables. A conga line. I groaned. I hated conga lines.

I should mention that I was watching the scene through high-powered binoculars. I followed as the bride slung her ample, lace-covered rear end in every direction, toppling a glass of red wine, trying to coax some bowling ball of a relative who was scarfing down a plate of stuffed clams up into the procession. Meanwhile, the grinning, affable groom did his Gowanus Expressway best just to hang on.

Lucky couple, I thought, wincing, thinking ten years down the line. Lucky me, to get to watch. All part of the job.

As special agent in charge of section C-10, the FBI's Organized Crime Unit in New York, I was heading up a stakeout of a wiseguy wedding at the posh South Fork Club in Montauk. Everybody who was anybody was here, assuming you were into wiseguys.

Everybody except for the one man I was really looking for.

The Boss. The Capo di tutti capi. Dominic Cavello. They called him the Electrician because he had started in that trade, pulling off construction scamsin New Jersey. The guy was bad, terror-level-red bad. And I had a slew of warrants on him, for murder, extortion, union tampering, and conspiracy to finance narcotics.

Some of my buddies at the Bureau said Cavello was already in Sicily, laughing at us. Another rumor had him in the Dominican Republic at a resort he owned. Others had him in Costa Rica, in the UAE, even in Moscow.

But I had a hunch that he was here, somewhere in this noisy crowd on the South Fork Club's beautiful back deck. His ego was too large. I'd been tracking him for three years, and I expect he knew it. But nothing, not even the federal government, was going to make Dominic Cavello miss his closest niece's wedding.

"Cannoli One, this is Cannoli Two," a voice deadpanned in my earpiece.

It was Special Agent Manny Oliva, whom I'd stationed down on the dunes with Ed Sinclair. Manny grew up in the projects of Newark, then got himself a law degree at Rutgers. He'd been assigned to my C-10 unit straight out of Quantico.

"Anything on the radar, Nick? Nothing but sand and seagulls here."

"Yeah," I said, dishing it back, "ziti mostly. A little lasagna with hot sausages, some stuffed shrimp and parmigiana."

"Stop! You're making me hungry down here, Nicky Smiles."

Nicky Smiles. That's what the guys I was close to in the unit called me. Maybe because I was blessed with a pretty nice grin. More likely it was because I'd grown up with a bunch of these wiseguys in Bay Ridge, and my name ended in a vowel. Plus, I knew more about La Cosa Nostra than just about anyone else in the Bureau, and I was offended by what this scum had done to the reputations of all Italian Americans: my own family, friends of mine who couldn't have been more law-abiding, and, of course, myself.

So where the hell are you, you sly sonovabitch? You're here, aren't you, Cavello? I swept the binoculars along the dance line.

The procession had snaked all the way around the deck by now, past all the juiced-up goombahs in tuxedos with purple shirts and their high-hairdo wives busting through their gowns. The bride sidled up to a table of old-timers, padrones in bolo ties sipping espresso, trading old tales. One or two of the faces looked familiar.

That's when the bride made her mistake.

She singled out one of the old men, leaned down, and kissed him on the cheek. The balding man was in a wheelchair, hands on his lap. He looked feeble and out of it, as if he were recovering from an illness, maybe a stroke. He had on thick black-rimmed glasses, no eyebrows, like Uncle Junior on The Sopranos.

I stood up and focused the lens on him. I watched her take him by the hands and try to get him up. The guy looked like he couldn't pee upright, and he could barely wrap his arms around her, never mind get up and dance.

Then my heart slammed to a stop.

You arrogant sonovabitch! You came!

"Tom, Robin, that old geezer with the black glasses. The bride just gave him a kiss."

"Yeah," Tom Roach came back. He was inside a van in the parking lot watching pictures sent from cameras planted in the club. "I got him. What's the problem?"

I took a step closer, zooming in with the lens.

"No problem. That's Dominic Cavello!"

    Words Just Came To Life!

    This book was outstanding, could not put it down. The writing was magnificent that the words just seem to come to life. I would dream about what the story would look like just by the pages I had read. Anyone that loves thriller - this is the best book you could ever add to your library.

    The Jury is back, the verdict is Guilty! of being another great story.

    This one you will want to read from cover to cover the same day. Fast pace action, great characters, ciff hangers in every chapter,with a very satisfying ending. What can I say, few can match Patterson when it comes to challenging your mind to try to solve the case before he does, and there is always an unusual twist. Buy this, even if it's your first Patterson book (and I find that impossible to believe) you will not regret it.

    AMAZING!!!

    This is among the top of Patterson's best novels!! I just finished this book a couple of minutes ago, and the ending was the best way this book could have ended. I can't really see it happening, but hopefully Patterson does a sequal for this one!!

    This is my second book that I read from James Patterson and I was instantly hook. The way the character try to get out of jury duty like everyone who have serve knows what type of excuses to give but it does not work. Once you start to read the first chapter you don't want to stop you want to find out how it will end. That's what make a good book it take you from the start until the very end making you begging for more. I recommend anyone to read this book but if you like the Godfather Movies this will be perfect for you.

    This book hooked me from the beginning and never let go. The plot was interesting and action packed. Patterson and Gross have great characters in this story. The book is very descriptive, making it easy to imagine the scenes in your head. Overall, this book deserves an 'A' from me.

    Outstanding Non-Stop Thriller.

    I finished reading this book today. It was excellent. The story started out good & pretty funny. Later on it was a wild ride. All caused by this mob boss Dominic Cavello. Patterson always makes his villians so gruesome. Oh theres also romance in this one. In between all that choas & revenge Andie and Nick found love. James Patterson and Andrew Gross make a great writing team. I love their books. And Joe Mantegna delivered a wonderful narration of the story. I would recommend anyone to read Judge & Jury.

    I Have My Good Old Page Turner Back

    Patterson and Gross is a perfect team. The way this book is composed, legendary page turner has come back. It's another epic of FBI against the Mob but the mystery of it is suspenseful with a lot of twist and turn. You will find it hard to put it down. I have been a little disappointed with all the recent Patterson's novels but I think Judge&Jury well deserves a come back for us Patterson's fans.

    One of his best!

    This Mystery is a Disappointment Yet, MR. Patterson can do better.

    I'm not sure what has happened to Mr. Patterson's writing skills, but it seems to me that a majority of his novels that he has co-wrote with someone have been real duds. I just finished reading his latest release, "The 6th Target and that was another real dud. All I can say to Mr. Patterson: "I have enjoyed many of your earlier novels, would you get serious and start creating well-written stories that you certainly have the talent to conceive."

    In the story "Judge and Jury", I almost got excited and began to read pages non-stop, but then the story started to fall apart again. At this point I was reading the scene where the mob leader is on trial for murder. Does he care? No. He just solves the problem by hiring an assassin to destroy the bus that the jury panel is riding on. Murder an entire jury? I just shook my head, wondering who was next: the judge, the DA?. I know this is fiction but the scenes should have some resemblance to the real world. Then we have Nick Pellisante, the FBI agent in hot pursuit of the mobster all over the world with a bank account that seems to have no bottom to it.

    It's not a terrible read, but I do feel that it is not a super mystery read. If you are a die hard fan of Mr. Patterson, you may find it an enjoyable read.

    Ok Read

    The book was better than I thought it would be. I thought it would be filled with mostly court scenes, but it wasn't. For the most part, it was a page turner (especially because Patterson's chapters are so long) and it kept me entertained. It isn't one of my favorites by him, but it was still an ok read. Not sure I cared much for the ending though.

    My first Patterson, not a dissapointment

    This was the first James Patterson book I have read. My mom and a friend always rave about how good and fast paces his books are so I finally borrowed this... and.. LOVED IT!!

    The action was fast paces and the characters interesting.

    When Dominic Cavello is put on trail he sit theres smugly, knowing that no one is going to put him away. After the jury is "taken care of" a chase ensues to capture the gangster and bring him to justice, along with a couple of European criminals too. I found myself rooting for FBI agent Nick even after he was taken off the case. The chemistry between he and Andi just adds to the books drama. Loved it!!

    Way too predictable...

    This was my first James Patterson book and may be my last. The plot was decent enough to keep me reading, but very unoriginal. I swear James Patterson had the story line of 'Team America' in mind while writing. If you're looking for a quick read that is mildly entertaining, go for it. But don't waste your money in stores, just borrow it from your library. You won't want to keep it anyway.

    Great Read !

    Was pleasantly surprised where Patterson takes you in this book. I thought it was one of his better ones.

    An All Around Good Book

    Judge & Jury is a fast-pace thriller that had me wanting to read more. This book is filled with twists and turns and has a great plot. The author describes all the characters in great detail. I would strongly recommend this exciting novel by James Patterson.
