Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Told in only three chapters, this book makes the perfect transition for readers that are beyond easy readers but not quite ready for chapter books. The bright illustrations add more expressiveness to the story and will further engage readers. Fans of Kate DiCamillo’s mischievous pig Mercy Watson will also like this.
—Booklist Online

McDonald gives emerging readers their own series that offers the same realism and zany humor as her previous "Judy Moody" books. Madrid’s digital illustrations are clearly based on those created by Peter H. Reynolds; they are in full color and in great abundance, which helps support and engage brand new readers. ... This new series will be a welcome addition to the library and a great stepping stone to McDonald’s original chapter book series.

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Jessica loves pigs, and she is hoping to get a potbellied pig for her birthday. She tells her friend, Judy Moody, that she has dropped many hints to her parents, and now she wants Judy to help her search around the house to see if she will be getting a pig. They look all over and finally find some pig presents in the closet. Jessica is disappointed, but they find a “Pig Out” game and decide to play. They play the game until they hear Jessica’s mother. As she is putting the game away, Jessica discovers that one on the pigs in the game is missing. She searches but cannot find it, and then goes to Judy’s place to see if she knows where it is. Judy is in a tent in her backyard. When Jessica hears something in the tent, Judy will not let her come in. They get mad at each other, and Jessica “un-invites” Judy from the birthday party. But Judy shows up at Jessica’s house anyway, and she has a potbellied piglet for her friend. Jessica’s parents had asked Judy to hide the pig for them. They finish the party by having fun playing with the pig. This book in the “Judy Moody and Friends” series is on a level for children who are just beginning to read chapter books. The illustrations are cute and colorful, but the story itself lacks some important characteristics. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 4 to 8.
