Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Erika Clark
Judy moody is a young girl who lives in Frog Neck Lake, Virginia. Since April of 2010, Judy has been starring in novels, activity books, and a journal. Her moods are what attract different types of audiences and because of this her books have been published in more than twenty countries and languages. Judy's moods range from: happy, sad, grouchy, impossible, envious, curious, eager, frustrated, mad, and on top of the world. Little did she know that her summer was going to take a turn for the best. A movie was to be made about her called "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer." Judy always dreamt about becoming famous and now she finally was. She had an interview with many of the people who helped make the movie. Judy asked John Schultz, the director, "If a kid wants to be a movie director, what advice might you have for him or her?" His response was to simply be a director right now and start working towards that goal or any other goals in life. With this book, the lesson can be taught in a classroom environment would be "positivity" and to approach a new situation with a great attitude. The characters in this movie overcame obstacles and accomplish many goals. For instance, Jordana Beatty, the girl who played Judy Moody, was from Australia and needed to master an American accent in order to play the role of Judy in the movie. Also, the movie was filmed in Studio City, California, which was a challenge since the production crew had to replicate a lot Virginia locations from the book series. Kristi Frankenhemier, the location manager, took care of this task brilliantly. Megan McDonald also kept the readers' interest by having interactive exercises at the bottom of various pages. Teachers can use these text features in lessons by having students make personal connections to the characters in the book. Also, with the combination of numerous photos and extraordinary events, such as a race with tightrope walking and a screaming monster ride, the readers will enjoy reading the text and would want to continue to learn more about the characters.
