En el prestigioso colegio St. Oswald, en el norte de Inglaterra, acaba de inaugurarse el nuevo curso escolar. Un curso que va a ser especial, ya que las rancias y adormecidas aulas se han visto inundadas de aires de cambio gracias a la incorporación de muchos avances tecnológicos. Los profesores, que siempre habían ejercido su oficio de la forma más tradicional, deberán olvidar los antiguos métodos para adaptarse a los tiempos. Es una renovación que a algunos, como el viejo profesor de latín Roy Straitley, les viene grande. Straitley se siente marginado, no sabe utilizar un ordenador y quizá tenga que plantearse la jubilación, aunque St. Oswald lo haya significado todo en su vida. Pero no será esto lo único que perturbe el ambiente escolar. Bajo las pequeñas rivalidades y discusiones triviales que se dan cada día subyace algo mucho más peligroso: un rencor amargo y profundo, que ha permanecido oculto durante trece años y que está a punto de estallar.
