    Great Music, But...

This is certainly an entertaining sampler of midcentury jump blues, boogie and r&b swing, but first the problems: there is no annotation whatsoever apart from the name of the artists, and the songs are spread acrtoss four CDs when they could have easily fit on two, increasing the price to an unnecessary level. That said, there are great music and artists here, from some of the earliest work of Ray Charles to boogie-woogie masters like Jay McShann. While insultingly trying to capitalize on the swing fad of the late 1990s with the artwork, "dance instructions, and brief explanatory liner notes, you can ignore that and just groove to the music, which DOES swing unlike many whitebread 1990s imitators, and can provide an introduction to real 1940s jump blues.
