Overview

It's out of this world! The first in a hilarious, fully illustrated series for young chapter-book readers, now in paperback.

Julian Rodriguez is on a mission for the Mothership. He's been sent to Earth to study human lifeforms and their bizarre habits--from their disgusting diet (orange sticks named carrots, flavorless liquid called water, and the revolting substance known as vegi-dogs) to their repressive treatment of their young (forcing them to carry out menial tasks known as chores, withholding access to the great cultural masterpieces called cartoons). When Julian's Maternal Unit assigns a hideous task, it's nearly too much for the hardened space veteran to bear--but he finds his courage at last.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
First Officer Julian Rodriguez is on a long-term mission for the Mothership, disguised as an eight-year-old boy. He has suffered many injustices in his time on Earth, including having to take standardized tests at his education center (known to Earthlings as school); being ambushed by girl bullies on his way back to his home study site; and being denied his preferred nutrition capsule of Ring Dings, Strawberry Fizz, and Cool Ranch Crispy Poofs. Officer Rodriguez, however, is faced with a much more heinous indignity when he arrives back to his home study site: his nemesis, Evilomami, also known as The Maternal Unit, forces him to dispose of a shiny canister filled with human refuse. In other words, Julian's mom makes him take out the trash. What follows is a battle of wills of intergalactice proportions. Officer Rodriguez ultimately turns to the Mothership and insists on being taken off his mission, but when the Mothership agrees and decides the best solution is to vaporize Earth and all its inhabitants, Julian has a change of heart. He calls off the Mothership attack, takes out the trash, and Planet Earth is safe for another day. This is the paperback version of the graphic novel that was originally published in hardcover in 2008. It is a funny, quirky take on the challenges of school, friends, family, and chores and will resonate with readers of all ages. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp
