Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Budding fashion designers will enjoy this paper doll kit created as a spin-off of the 1970s era American Girl doll, Julie. Enclosed within a fairly sturdy book case is: a "Julie" paper doll clothed only in underwear; a selection of 40 different sheets of faux-fabric printed paper; a spinnable color wheel (permanently mounted in the front case cover) with useful definitions; clothing stencils; a design stamp and accessory stickers; and, most importantly, a wire-bound booklet of design instructions. Besides detailing the information for making each outfit, the booklet also produces a running commentary on the fictional character Julie and the kind of outfits appropriate to her life. This means sidebars describing the "free-flowing" fashions of the period such as peasant dresses and bell-bottoms, without—heaven forbid—calling them "hippie." The standard 10-year-old won't appreciate the irony, but it is fascinating watching the appearance of revisionist versions of such recent history—through paper-doll couture, yet!
