I loved reading this book to my children.

Julius is a gentle giant. Like all of Syd Hoff books there is a gentle humor that I found delightful. Tom

    Julius

I ordered this book because my 27 month old son had enjoyed "Sammy the Seal" by the same author when my son was younger. In fact, I ordered a few other books by the same author along with Julius. I was very dissapointed by the story. This book is mainly concerned with making reading accessable to the audience for which the series is targeted (Very young children). It's a reading exercise. There's a beginning, middle, and end. And of course, there's a problem to be solved, but it lacks emotion, inteligence, charm, realism, I could go on. Also, it shows a small child holding a rifle, which bothered me because this doesn't contribute to or enrich the story in anyway. I returned the other books I had ordered from this series and kept this one because my son saw the cover and liked it. There are so many wonderful stories for young children, I will avoid any that are inteded to help reinforce reading as a skill. My bright son certainly deserves better!
