Overview

In the seventh book of the Calendar Mysteries—an early chapter book mystery series featuring the younger siblings of the A to Z Mysteries detectives—the kids and their pets are going to march in the Fourth of July Pet Parade! The winner of the patriotic pet costume contest gets a great prize—to be mayor for a day! For Bradley's entry, Polly the Pony gets to be President Thomas Jefferson for the day. But Polly runs off with her red wig and hat still sitting on her head. Maybe she has stage fright! Can the kids find her and calm her down before the fourth of July festivities begin?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kim Harris Thacker
Independence Day in Green Lawn finds Polly the pony and Pal the dog at the mercy of others, just as the people who lived in the American colonies during the early to mid-1700s were at the mercy of King George the Third until they fought for their independence. But it is not a king who is directing Polly's and Pal's every move—it is their owners, who are intent on their pets winning the mayor's Revolution-inspired costume contest so they can share the reward of being mayor for the day. In this "Calendar Mysteries" series chapter book (which is part of the "Stepping Stones" series), Bradley, Brian, Nate, and Lucy soon realize they cannot force their pets to do their bidding any more than King George could force his subjects across the Atlantic Ocean to pay taxes without representation. This book, which contains numerous lively black-and-white illustrations and features the younger siblings of the "A to Z Mysteries" characters, is not a treatise on the events leading up to the Revolutionary War, but it does contain enough information about said events to inspire young readers to want to learn more about how the American colonies gained their independence from Great Britain. It is also a great book for animal lovers. Reviewer: Kim Harris Thacker
