Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
National Geographic, like others who publish early readers, has made it easy for kids who want to learn more, earn prizes, play games, watch videos and take quizzes by linking to the Internet. For those who have smartphones (presumably parents of the young audience), there is even a code to scan to activate a video. The “dear parents note” reminds them that kids are curious and want to know about the world around them. Reading leads to vocabulary development and triggers a thirst for learning. In this “National Geographic Readers” series title, kids learn about a puppy and the activities that it likes to engage in. Puppies like to jump, tug on items, run, roll, play catch and wag their tails. Like people they use their sensitive noses to smell items in the world around them. They also have keen eyesight and hearing. There is a series of pictures at the end of the text that asks kids to tell their own story. Instead of a glossary list at the close of the book, there is a vocabulary tree on the first page. This reader is a wonderful introduction to dogs and is just right for kids who are ready to read. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 4 to 6.
