Chapter One
Hi! My name is Spalding!
... and I have the very BEST pet a fish could ever hope for.
His name is Jason, and he is a BOY.
You can't get a boy just anywhere, you know. You have to WIN one, like I did.
See ... I'm a fish who lived in a fish bowl at the Circus.
Being a fish in a Circus fish bowl is how many fish find their pet humans. Of course, children are a fish's favourite kind of pet.
At the Circus, little boys and girls try to Toss a ball into a bowl that has a fish in it, To become that fish's pet.
Me ... I always avoid the ball by jumping into another bowl or hitting the ball away, and hope that no one saw me do it.
I wouldn't want the Ringmaster to ask me to perform- because I'm very afraid of those big noisy crowds.
It's funny ... I never really wanted a pet. Because children seem like a lot of hard work ... and they make so much noise!
But then I saw Jason and began to change my mind about children. He was so different from other kinds. He said please.
Jason was waiting patiently and quietly in line. I started thinking that maybe I do want a pet ... a pet like him. So I wondered, if he throws the ball and it comes to my bowl, should I let it fall in? I had to decide fast because ...
... all of a sudden a ball was coming straight for my bowl! I saw it just in time. But it wasn't thrown by Jason! No one saw me knock the ball into Slim's bowl. I hope Slim will be very happy with his new pet.
