School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Fourth graders Sally and TJ explore Sapphire Mines and try to solve the mystery of a stolen treasure map. In order for them to advance to other areas of the mine, players must complete games/problems in nine curriculum-based areas: "Platform Problems," "Laser Letters," "Map Madness," Tablet Turnover," "Clue Climber," "Wacky Words," "Crystal Keys," "Race Chaser," and "Costume Caper." Math skills include multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction of fractions and whole numbers, estimation and rounding. Other activities feature world geography, art and must, earth and natural sciences, spelling and language arts. Throughout the games, clues to the mystery are presented. TJ and Sally interview residents of Sapphire Mines in order to solve the mystery. Once all games are completed, players are given the chance to review the clues and solve the mystery. There are three different endings to the mystery, allowing players to use the program multiple times. Most of the games have a "Help" section which allows players to learn more information on the subject. In most instances, if an answer given is not correct, a new question is posed and there is no self-correction. In one or two instances, players cannot advance until the correct response is selected. The program's difficulty can be customized to individual student's skill levels. There is a "cross-curricular assessment test." Teachers can monitor each student's progress. Although the program is intended for students in the fourth grade, some of the concepts might be difficult for this age group. For example, in the synonym matching game, the synonym for "transform" is "metamorphose." Some of the directions are difficult for youngsters to understand without teacher assistance. On the plus side, this enrichment tool features likeable characters, excellent graphics and audio, and help screens. Student proficiency can be assessed, and difficulty levels can be adjusted.-Sharon Lawrence, Downers Grove Public Library, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
