This book deals with the healthy consequences of proper deep breathing. However, the exercises are presented in rambling prose, making it difficult to know how many times you're supposed to do each one. I love Pam Grout, and her later work (E Squared) is very well-written. Buy this book, but be prepared to create a table of the exercises, how they're done, how many times each is done and when to do them.

This book is great! I was somewhat skeptical about just breathing to lose weight but within the first six days I had lost a total of 12 pounds, cut back on smoking without any discomfort or irritability, and had a huge burst of energy...it's really changed my life. Even if I hadn't lost any weight, I'd still be doing just because it made me feel so good. Life is fun again! It's much easier to do everyday than BodyFlex, which is pretty easy in itself. Try it!

Pam Grout's style of writing is fun, informative and a pleasure to read. I have used the breathing exercises and they work! If you are looking for a way to lose weight and strenuous exercise is not your thing, pick up this book and start loosing weight by practicing these easy effective breathing exercises. No wonder the dieting industry hasn't launched this effective weightloss into the mainstream---it works, and you don't have to buy pills, special equipment or starve on some crazy concocted diet plan! Extra Bonus is the increase in energy and stress relief! Who knew deep breathing exercises could have so many benefits!! The subtitle of JUMPSTART YOUR METABOLISM is more informative than its title. That subtitle: HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT BY CHANGING THE WAY YOU BREATHE. *** Free-lance journalist author Pam Grout is also a breathing coach. This 176 page paperback distills her years of coaching, reading and thinking about breathing and its connection to general wellness and to weight loss. *** The book links breathing to overall wellness through citations of authorities, sharing the author's and her clients' experiences and through reference to the 14 books of her bibliography. It also describes the general relationships between three main energy sources of the human body: eating, drinking and breathing. *** The author believes that average non-athletes use no more than 1/5 of the capacity of their two lungs. If full or nearly full capacity is reached, however, then the body accesses more oxygen -- unlike food and drink, oxygen cannot be stored it takes steady breathing. More oxygen burns fat more efficiently, washes the brain with a substance the brain uses more of than any other organ and generally makes people feel more energetic and satisfied. *** Although Pam Grout herself exercises vigorously and recommends it to all, she nonetheless says that better breathing all by itself will produce weight loss in the obese. She presents a number of exercises to make readers more conscious of their breath and how to improve it: by breathing deeper, longer and more self- consciously. Singing is also a great way to expand lung capacity. Watching a sleeping baby gives tips. If we breathe deeply, we might even be able to sense our diaphragm pushing air down when we inhale and up and out when we exhale. *** Canny breathers will do at least one set of 100-breath exercises per day. Ms Grout describes and evaluates a number of such exercises and various situations and places in which to do them. She asks us to imagine the dome shape of our diaphragms and the triangles which are our lungs. But she does not provide drawings. She strongly encourages breathing in from the depths of the abdomen and, when breathing out, to tighten stomach muscles at the very end to expel every last molecule of the 70% of all body wastes expelled by our lungs. -OOO-
