Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Martha Chamberlain
Using deductive reasoning that belies their few years, twins Bradley and Brian and friends Nate and Lucy investigate the mystery of the strawberry patch prowler. Discovering that one bite has been taken out of each ripe morsel portends disaster for their secret plan to make strawberry jam for Father's Day, using their grandmother's old recipe. Could it be a desert Gila monster—hardly in cold Connecticut—or a long-necked creature that could reach over the fence? Not even their pony Polly could reach into the garden. Maybe the culprit digs a hole under the fence?, But the fence is solid. The children implement resourceful attempts to eliminate suspects and catch the strawberry thief. Even a scarecrow made from scrap lumber, dressed in Dad's old clothes, does not dissuade the garden gangster. Roy introduces a word most young readers would not recognize when he shows the children covering the strawberries with a giant seine (fishing net) they find in the barn. Having overheard the boys' plan to make jam, Mom plans her own surprise. Roy entertains with appropriate kid-language, shows a modern family dividing chores amicably, and encourages deductive reasoning. Gurney's black/white illustrations add humor and whimsy. Part of the "Calendar Mysteries" series. Reviewer: Martha Chamberlain

    Perfect pint-sized mysteries!

Overall Review: Perfection! These pint-sized mystery plots are engaging, humorous, and ideal for young children and independant young readers. Showcasing the younger siblings from the highly acclaimed A to Z Mysteries books, author Ron Roy has given us another winning series. I read these titles aloud to my 3, 5, and 7 year old children. When I had to stop for the night, they cried for me to keep reading. My 3 year-old even spent the following day chatting and speculating about what she thought was going to happen next! I have nothing but total admiration for author Ron Roy and his gift for crafting enthralling, thoughtful, and age-appropriate mysteries for children. These are winning books that will have children everywhere asking, no, begging, for more! Overall Rating is 5 out of 5 stars!

    Content Review:

    PROFANITY: None

    SEXUAL CONTENT: None

    VIOLENCE: None

    MATURE THEMES: None

    RECOMMENDED AGE GROUP: 9+

These are definitely Squeaky Clean Reads. The publisher recommends these titles for ages 9-12. However, I found that my 3, 5, and 7 year-old children were all very engaged with these stories as well. These would be great read-aloud choices. Also, if you have an independant reader who is Pre-K to 2nd grade, these books would be good selections, as the storylines are completely appropriate for very young readers. May Magic and June Jam are recommended as Squeaky Clean Reads for ages 9+, and for younger readers as well.
