Children's Literature - Ann Sanger
June wakes up one morning with a tune in her head, but it needs words. Her friend Joe suggests monsters and dinosaurs. June says the song is sweet and the words should be too. "Sweet enough to put sheep to sleep." Joe thinks that is dumb. Luckily, friend Mike comes along to help the two find a compromise. This book is one in a series "We Both Read," which encourages both parent and child involvement in the reading experience. Parent and child take turns reading the book aloud. The parent's part on the left-hand pages has smaller print, several more sentences, and a challenging vocabulary. The child's part on the right-hand side, has fewer words, and is written at an early reading level. This series was recently voted one of the 100 Best Children's Products of 1998. As an educator, I can testify that when parents and children read together, vocabulary is increased and reading development is improved. Sindy McKay has written several other books in this series including The Big Tan Van. Both these books have little story plot but seem to concentrate on the rhyming of words. June's Tune emphasizes long vowels such as bride and ride. Award winning illustrator, Bob Staake's whimsical art is bright, bold, and colorful. His humorous style is featured in other books such a The Red Lemon, greeting cards, and many popular advertisements.
