Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This colorfully and playfully illustrated book is not a traditional Halloween story. Its rhyming text takes you to the deep jungle where an elephant is dressed up as a jester, the alligator looks like a county sheriff, the rhinoceros is ready for a Hawaiian luau and a monkey marches by as a pirate. The jungle celebration includes carving pumpkins, a costume contest, a parade, trick or treating, dancing and eating. Like many Halloween enthusiasts, the animals end up exhausted with stomachaches. Children will enjoy this spin on Halloween as they recognize themselves in the lives of jungle animals. Teachers will have fun with the poetic text as well as the creative opportunities for story extensions. 2000, Albert Whitman. Ages 2 to 8. Reviewer: Andrea Sears Andrews
School Library Journal
PreS-K-This rhyming story relates how jungle animals prepare for a Halloween party. They engage in all of the typical activities associated with such an event-making costumes, trick-or-treating, playing party games, and then going home. The rhythm is consistent and will inspire clapping from a young audience-"Through the trees,/oh, so dark!/Over the hills/to Jungle Park./Jungle Prizes/Jungle Prancing/Jungle Music/Jungle Dancing/It's nothing like you've ever seen-/It's a Jungle Halloween!" The vivid, double-page paintings show nonthreatening and adorable cartoonlike animals. Pineapple and coconut-o'-lanterns light the jungle while trick-or-treat bags are filled with candy and peanuts, bananas, and other assorted items. The story and images steer clear of traditional Halloween themes, which can easily frighten preschoolers. Use this book with Zoe Hall's It's Pumpkin Time! (Scholastic, 1994) and Patricia Hubbard's Trick or Treat Countdown (Holiday, 1999). A surefire showstopper for storytimes.-Linda M.
