Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Deborah Zink Roffino
Zoologist and adventurer Jack Hanna narrates this exciting photographic safari through two of African countries, Kenya and Uganda. His enthusiasm and wonder are evident as wide-angle vistas compete with up-close shots of the innocent eyes of the animals. From the Maasai girl milking the goat, to the gorilla munching celery, to the elephants locked by the trunk, these are impressions of Kenya that will not be soon forgotten. The text is full of anecdotes and information.
Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
Beautiful, color photographs and a brief conversational text combine to take us on a picture-taking safari in Kenya and Uganda. Led by noted wildlife conservationist, Jack Hanna, and his skillful guide Ahmed, the group found, observed and photographed a wide variety of African animals, including baboons, lions and the endangered mountain gorillas. The group also visited a Masai village and learned something about their culture. A map and introduction are included.
Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
This is my kind of trip. In the comfort of my home, I drove through the savannas of Kenya seeing baby baboons playing, a gerenuk eating leaves high on a tree, a pride of lions relaxing, wildebeests fighting, an elephant charging and a close-up of a rhinoceros calf with her 'cute' little horn. When that calf reaches 3,000 pounds that horn won't be so 'cute.' From Kenya, we head for Uganda to track mountain gorillas. We were lucky to have found them as their numbers are less then 500. The photograph of a young gorilla chewing wild celery is a prize winner. All who read this book will agree that these animals deserve their place on this earth. There is no better way to introduce young readers to the plight of these animals. Some of today's children may become zoo directors or wildlife conservationists like Hanna.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-According to Hanna, a safari "...used to be a hunting trip to Africa, but these days it's a journey to see and photograph all the fascinating animals that live there." Leaving from Nairobi, Hanna and his crew locate a variety of creatures, including zebras, lions, and giraffes. Landscapes and people round out the photographic journey. This personal account reads much like a family vacation scrapbook-extremely interesting to those involved and considerably less so to everyone else. The full-color photographs are sometimes out of focus and over or under exposed. Composition also leaves something to be desired. Heads of animals and people are sometimes severed. The photo of ostriches is captioned "...they can run up to 40 miles an hour," while the birds' legs have been cropped out of the picture. The text is equally lacking. Stilted language-" `Wow! It's a leopard!' I said"; "Boy, was I scared!"-alternates with didactic and often patronizing tones. With all the fine books available on Africa, this one is not a first choice.-Lisa Wu Stowe, Great Neck Library, NY
