Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
On her family's vacation to Hawaii, little Junie B. yearns for a picture-perfect day, an afternoon when she can take flawless photos with her fancy new camera. But the entire world (especially those grouchy women on the plane) seems to be conspiring against our budding first-grade Dorothea Lange.
Children's Literature
The unique and adorable voice of Junie B. delights her audience as she bubbles over with excitement about going on a vacation. She finds herself in quite the pickle when her teacher asks her to keep a picture journal of her trip to Hawaii. It seems simple to Junie B. She clicks off pictures and puts them in the picture diary. Well, Mr. Scary makes it a little complicated when he expects her to write simple captions under the pictures. Junie B. can handle that until her adventure in Hawaii starts with her being stuck between two grouchy ladies on the airplane. It has to get better, but it doesn't. One picture after another and Junie B. still is not having her dream vacation, until her new friend, Don, takes her family into the wilds of Hawaii where Junie B. becomes everyone's hero. Again Barbara Park takes her wonderful Junie B. character and shows her young readers how to make a vacation fun and educational. Junie B. may be creating her own travel guides before long. As an educator, I wonder if the voice of Junie B. is more of a misplaced kindergartner then an actual 1st grader. I love Junie B., but she needs to mature a little more to keep up with her readers. My trip to Hawaii through Junie B's eyes still makes me smile and I can't wait to have a student read her next adventure to me. Aloha! 2006, Random House, and Ages 5 to 7.

From The Critics
K-Gr 2-Readers will happily board the plane with precocious Junie B. as she sets off for Hawaii with her parents. Her school assignment is to complete a photo journal documenting her vacation, but from the start it's clear that her adventures are really misadventures. Her first photo captures two "grouchpots," one in the seat in front of Junie B., and the other behind. Clearly, neither passenger is pleased with the girl's seat kicking, endless chatter, or imaginative games with stuffed elephant Philip Johnny Bob and Barbie doll Delores. In the hotel gift shop, Junie insists on purchasing a parrot swim ring that proves much too small and gets stuck on her body for the entire trip. Later episodes include an unfortunate encounter with eels and jellyfish while snorkeling, and a bird that nests in Junie B.'s hair when she adorns herself with exotic flowers. Clever language and outrageous antics make this irrepressible youngster a standout character. Brunkus's delightful black-and-white illustrations are a delight.-Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CT Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    I read them myself?

My daughter joined a book club and began reading this series. I must admit that I enjoy reading them myself. Junie B. is so refreshing and true to what little people think and say. I so enjoy hearing the girls at book club discuss and laugh. One night I sat in bed trying to catch up and laughed the whole time. My husband thought I was crazy but I had a ball reading this children's book. Must have for all little girls ages 5 - 8

    Junie b wow

I admit i read these when I was young and just loved them and this one was my abseulute favorite. THESE U DONT HAVE TO READ IN ORDER I DID NOT. Junie b the b stands for beatrice is a very funny with a huge imagination. And picks on just to people may and her little brother ollie. THIS story is about her family going to Hawii and doing so many fun things like for junie b not have ollie come to Hawiii and stah home. BUT junie b cant be patient for some things and its true. JUNIE B IS CRAZZY when it comes to her travel journal that her teacher had gave her before she left to put pictures of her in hawii in thhe journal. BUT is getting bad pictures of here and are not turning out to be what she thought it would be. And junie b jones trip is turnning out terrrible welll thats what she really thinks and its true it really is. I think its ages six and up if yout a good reader for your age or nine and under to six haha. Biut I stopped reading them cause there to easy for me but bsometimes i keep them by me and take a look at them cause I jjust love her crazy and funny additude. READ OTHER BOOKS BY BARBRA PARK TOO

    Terrible

I would never expose my child to such writing. The grammar is appalling and the English is terrible. You don't start sentences with "And" and "flinged" is NOT a word. I understand that the narrator *is* a child but thats where the skillof the writer comes into play.
Children learn from books and early exposure shapes their language. This series of books is an apt illustration as to why so many people speak and write such terrible English.
It appears, that *anyone* can write childrens books these days!!!

    A reviewer

Here is a great book to read, full of excitement and many thrills. I teach kindergarten and I first introduced my students to the Junie B. books last year. They loved her! Now I read them throughout the year and will continue to read them with my future students. In this book, Junie B. gets to go to Hawaii on a paradise vacation. She is just as excited as I would be if I found out that I was going. Her teacher, Mr. Scary, gave her an assignment to take pictures and report back to the class her many adventures. Junie B. takes you with her to Hawaii and relives the adventures. She is wonderful! I would recommend the book to any teacher and any young child. She is the greatest!

    Terrible . . .

In my opinion all the Junie B Jones books are awful - the grammar is absolutely appalling and some of the words used are offensive.
