Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2In this early chapter book, Junie, a boisterous, effervescent kindergartner, and her friend Grace invite themselves over to the home of Lucille's wealthy grandmother, with whom the girl and her family live. They agree to help Lucille beg her "richie nanna" for a poodle. Once there, the girls find that everything in the house is exquisiteand untouchable. Lucille's bedspread is silk and her huge stuffed animals cost a fortune. Junie accidentally drops a crystal glass, which shatters into pieces. Her hot dog slides off her fork onto a white Irish linen table cloth. The friends have a good time but Junie is glad to go home to her own nanna's house where she can drink out of a plastic glass and not have to worry about breaking anything. Appealing black-and-white line-and-wash drawings extend the humorous situations. While parts of the story are funny and ring true, Junie's babyish, immature grammar will quickly wear thin.Janet M. Bair, Trumbull Library, CT
School Library Journal
Gr 2-3--Junie's kindergarten classmates convince her that an invisible monster lives under her bed. Her parents and grandmother are unable to convince her otherwise until Junie hits upon the idea of putting her unflattering school picture under the bed to frighten the monster. In Junie B. Jones Is Not a Crook, the little girl discovers that "finders keepers losers weepers" is not an appealing philosophy when she loses the special gloves her grandfather gave her and the child who finds them doesn't take them to the lost and found. Junie's first-person narration is sprinkled with deliberate grammatical errors and misunderstood word usage in an attempt to show a five-year-old's viewpoint ("I runned home," "They got stoled on purpose."). Precocious use of sophisticated language is also used to achieve an intended humorous effect. The black-and-white, full- and half-page illustrations reflect Junie's cockeyed view of the world and will help attract beginning chapter-book readers. The issues the child is dealing with are right on target for the intended age group, but Junie's personality is more annoying than endearing and the humor lacks freshness and spontaneity. Chapter 3: The Rules

Guess what!!?! Guess what!!?!

On Friday, Lucille's nanna called my mother!

And she invited me to spend the night with Lucille on Saturday!

And Mother didn't even say no!

My feet zoomed all around the house when I heard that!

"I'M SPENDIN' THE NIGHT! I'M SPENDIN' THE NIGHT! I'M SPENDIN' THE NIGHT!" I shouted.

I zoomed into my baby brother Ollie's room.

"HEY, OLLIE! I'M SPENDIN' THE NIGHT! I'M SPENDIN' THE NIGHT! I'M SPENDIN' THE—"

Just then, Mother runned in the door and she swished me right out of there.

It was not pleasant.

I brushed myself off.

"Yeah, only you shouldn't actually swish people," I said kind of quiet.

Mother raised her voice at me.

"How many times, Junie B.? How many times have I told you to stay out of Ollie's room while he's sleeping? Huh? How many?"

I thinked for a minute.

"A million bazillion," I said. "But that is just a ballpark figure."

Mother glared at me very mad.

I rocked back and forth on my feet.

"A ballpark figure is when you don't know the actual figure. And so you make up a figure. 'Cause that will get people off your back," I explained. "My boyfriend named Ricardo told me that. His father sells insurance, I believe."

Mother tapped her angry foot.

"We are not talking about Ricardo's father, Junie B. We are talking about going into Ollie's room while he's sleeping. And besides, I haven't said that you could spend the night at Lucille's I want to talk it over with your father first."

I hugged her leg.

"Please, Mother? Please? Please? I'll be good. I promise, Ipromise, I—"

Just then the front door opened.

It was my Daddy!

He was home from work!

I runned to him like a speedy rocket.

Then I hugged his leg, too. And he couldn't even shake me off.

"I'll be good, Daddy! I promise! I promise! I promise!"

All of a sudden, Mother swished me away again. She put me down in the living room.

Then she and Daddy did whispering in the hall.

And guess what?

They said I could go to Lucille's!!!

"YIPPEE! YIPPEE! YIPPEE!" I shouted.

After that, I started to zoom some more. But Daddy quick grabbed me by my belt.

"Yeah, only here's the problem. I'm not actually zooming," I told him.

"No... here's the problem," said Daddy. "Before you spend the night with Lucille, you have to agree to the rules."

I raised up my eyebrows.

"Rules?" I asked. "There's rules involved?"

"Lots of rules," said Daddy.

Then he and Mother bended down next to me. And they told me the rules of spending the night.

They are: No running, no jumping, no shouting, no squealing, no hollering, no snooping, no spying, no arguing, no fighting, no cheating at games, no talking back to the nanna, no breaking other people's toys, no grumping, no crying, no fibbing, no tickling people when they say no, no staying up late, and absolutely no head-butting.

After I heard the rules, I did a sigh.

"Yeah, only that doesn't actually leave me much to work with," I said.

Mother ruffled my hair.

"Sorry, kiddo. But that's the deal," she said. "Take it or leave it."

"Take it!" I shouted out. "I'll take the deal!"

Then I kissed Mother and Daddy on their cheeks.

And I hugged them very tight.

And they couldn't shake me off again.

    Very Cute Book

My 5 year old daughter loves me to read Junie B Jones books to her. Even though there are a few pages in between the pictures it keeps her attention. I would recommend any of the Junie B books. Good reading time.

I am a 10 yr old FAN of Junie B. Jones books. This one, I love especially. Junie B. and her friend, (that Grace) were unexpectedly invited to a sleepover at Lucille's 'richie nanna's' mansion. Buy this book, you won't put it down until you finish! P.S-- Unlike other books, you'll be reading Junie B. over and over again.

    Junie B. is timeless!

I cannot believe someone actually made a comment about the narrator's GRAMMAR. Obviously, she is meant to be a little kindergartener/first grader so her grammar will not be up to par with yours!

Anyway, Junie B is a timeless character. I read them when I was younger and it's great to see my little sister doing the same.

    Good reading for young girls.

I know several young girls that just LOVE this series - I've been told by the mothers that when their daughters are reading these books they catch them laughting. So not only is there a lesson in each book - but there is a fun reading element for them as well.

Our granddaughter looks forward to receiving these books from us whenever we visit.
