Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A jaguar who could not hunt wild animals was caught in a trap by farmers because she was killing their sheep. When the jaguar was captured, the farmers called the Belize Zoo. Much to the surprise of the personnel there, this sickly animal gave birth to a cub that they named Junior Buddy. Humans replaced his mother who was too sick to care for her new baby. He was bottle fed and the little cat was taught to swim and climb trees. Junior Buddy loved people, but he was growing bigger and stronger and eventually it was no longer safe for people to be in the cage with him. The zoo developed a unique approach where people could enter a cage and still pet Junior Buddy and learn more about jaguars. The impact was to educate people about this endangered animal and to encourage support to protect them. The endnotes provide further details about jaguars and rescue programs. A level 2 "Scholastic Reader." Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

This is a wonderful story with beautiful photographs. It illustrates the good work happening in the world to preserve our endangered environments and species. The story is accessible on many levels, and children and adults are sure to enjoy it. This book makes a wonderful gift for animal lovers of all ages, and I hope it will be used widely in schools. I would like to see a Junior Buddy sequel, or perhaps a series of other animal profile books from The Belize Zoo!
