Meet the Author

I have always been interested in writing, although I did not do anything about it for many years. I made a career of the military, serving twenty years as a military policeman, at some time working most areas of law enforcement. I eventually ended up as a security supervisor for the nuclear missile facilities in North Dakota. During the early to mid 1960s, while stationed in Poitiers, France, and working as desk sergeant, on slow nights I experimented with writing fiction. The first two plots were really far out, and just didn't come together. After a tour in Vietnam in 1970, the plot finally clicked. I turned those two experiments into JUR: A Story of Pre-dawn Earth, this time using time travel as the gimmick. I also wrote Savage Land of Jur at the same time, but neither story went anywhere.
While researching the authorship of the Mike Shayne stories in MSMM, in 1980, I met James Reasoner, the current Shayne scribe, and we became fast friends. James took Pre-dawn Earth and made some changes, making the story a better read. But still the story just sat there. Ginger kept after me to submit the story, and finally I sent it to NBI, who thought the story worth publishing. Thirty years after writing the first two stories, I wrote the third and fourth books in the series.
In 1982, Ginger and I started Echoes, a hobby magazine for the fans and collectors of the old pulp magazines, with emphasis on The Shadow, Doc Savage, Edgar Rice Burroughs, etc. We published the magazine for one hundred issues, and then turned it into a newsletter. We still collect—and read—those wonderful stories from the 1930s and 1940s.
