Overview

In Abbeville's new Dinosaurs series, a talented artist and a noted paleontologist have teamed up to re-create the vanished world of the dinosaurs for young readers. Each volume in the series tells the story, in comic-book form, of a different dinosaur living in its particular geological time and place. The narrative is entertaining, while all the details of the dinosaur's behavior and its encounters with other species are rendered with scientific accuracy. At the back of each volume, meanwhile, are several short essays, abundantly illustrated with original drawings and photographs of fossils, that explain more about the creatures and geographical settings encountered in the comic.
A Jurassic Mystery, the second title, is a paleontological whodunit set in the late Jurassic period, 150 million years ago, at a place that now lies in Germany. It investigates the suspicious death of an archaeopteryx, an early species of bird descended from the dinosaurs.

The second volume in a series of six comic-book adventures that bring the dinosaurs back to life.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 5-8

These books have great individualized forewords, a dinosaur evolutionary tree, and extensive informative essays dealing with the geography, flora and fauna, and other matters of the time period covered. Each volume contains an identical foldout poster of the spiraling time line (also reproduced on the endpapers), ranging from the Big Bang to the close of the Cretaceous period. The books are narrated by our Sun. Journey spotlights the migration of a Plateosaurus to a nesting ground, with essays on such subjects as "The Continental Triassic" and "Terrestrial Fauna." Mystery features Archaeopteryx, the mystery being just how a birdlike creature ended up buried in underwater silt. Essay topics include "The Solnhofen Deposit" and "Flight in Vertebrates." In both books, the essays include additional artwork, photos, and diagrams. The translation from the Italian is stiff and stilted in both the graphic captions and in the text. The subject material in the essays is more mature than the graphic "story" and may not appeal to comic-book loving dinophiles-the two halves seem aimed at two very different audiences. However, the books will circulate because of the graphic sections. Whether the rest of the material will be consulted and/or absorbed is a matter of conjecture.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
