School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 8 UpTwo series titles that require a fairly high level of comprehension. They will serve researchers, as well as debaters, although readers may experience some problems locating material through the indexes. In The United Nations, a quote by Lincoln Bloomfield appears on page 9, and an article by him begins on page 52, yet the only page cited for him is 71, where his name does not appear. Richard Thornburgh is listed for pages 17 and 18 but not on 19 where his name appears several times. Although some countries mentioned are listed, others such as Burundi, Iran, Myanmar, and Syria are not. The Jury is more interesting reading and the issues debated have more recognition for average readers. The index for this title is somewhat more precise, but still could frustrate researchers. The material presented in both of these books is important and has been researched diligently as evidenced in the lengthy bibliographies. Listings of organizations to contact for further information are appended. These are solid selections for debating important issues, not books to curl up with, and yet that is what students must do in order to dig out some of the information.Marilyn Fairbanks, East Junior High School, Brockton, MA
