Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Drawing from the deep well of soul music past and present, Philly singer Musiq establishes himself at the forefront of the burgeoning neo-soul movement with his sophomore disc, Juslisten. Following in the heady wake of his reverential -- and multiplatinum-selling -- debut, Aijuswanaseing, the new disc is rife with richly harmonized, melodic ballads "Time", instantly hummable mid-tempo grooves "HalfCrazy", hip-hop- and funk-inspired jams "Caught Up with Her", and straight-church revival sessions "Religious". Vocally, Musiq arrives at his own style beyond the influences of his soul teachers, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Lyrically, however, Musiq is still playing ...

Lyrically, however, Musiq is still playing the sensitive role -- a polar opposite to his freaky Philly soul counterpart Bilal during a concert in New York City, Bilal joked, "Musiq just wants to talk to you, but I want to f*** you". Although there's nothing wrong with being the nice guy, on the lounge-ready mellow funk of "Stopplayin'," Musiq proves that he's no pushover. "I don't mean to pressure you baby," he forewarns his fickle ladylove. "But you really need to make up your mind." And while not many of his contemporaries would attempt a cover of the late George Harrison's wistful "Something," Musiq -- who sings the rock ballad partially in a Prince-like falsetto -- proves he's up to the task. In Musiq's case, good guys don't finish last -- in fact, Juslisen puts the former Mr. Soulchild at the head of the neo-soul class.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
On his second album, Juslisen, Musiq -- who dropped the "Soulchild" surname -- delivers on the promise of his debut, turning in a slyly assured, smoothly sexy collection of neo-soul. One of the most appealing things about Musiq is that he never oversells his songs, never indulges in hyperbolic screams or exaggerated grunts and moans. He lays back on the groove but doesn't disappear into it -- he deepens it and gives it character, making this more than a supremely seductive neo-soul record. And, to be sure, it is that, a wonderfully romantic mood album, but it's more than that because Musiq has other skills besides crooning and keeping a mood. First of all, he and his collaborators are first-class writers, sustaining interest not just through the singles, but through the album tracks. Then, he and his producers know how to deliver a sound that at once hearkens back to classic '70s soul and feels lushly contemporary. Musiq doesn't hide his love for classic soul -- he's seen on the back cover digging through crates of vinyl, surrounded by eight-tracks -- but the great thing about what he pulls off on Juslisen is that this love is absorbed, ingrained in the very music, so while it's reminiscent of Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye at times, it never feels like a forced attempt to follow in their footsteps. Which, of course, is why it feels like a worthy heir.
Rolling Stone - Ernest Hardy
Deeply sexy, filled with bottom-heavy grooves and dynamic production, [Juslisen's] an early candidate for R&B album of the year.

    HOTTEST RELEASE OF 2002!!!

It took almost 2 years but ''Juslisen'' was very well worth the wait. I am deeply inspired by Musiq, because through his work he teaches me about life and love. With each song I learn something new. This CD is excellent, because he presents situations that everyone has been through at one time or another. He's down to earth and he makes a lot of sense. I am his biggest fan. I love the whole CD but my favorite tracks would have to be ''newness'', ''religious'', ''babygirl'', ''halfcrazy'' ''previouscats'', ''realove''...man forget it....the whole CD. If you don't have this CD, you are lacking major $&#! in your life. Go pick it up!!! RESPECT

How can someone be so young and have such soul? I love his trueness to himself and the music he loves. It's a blessing to the world he was provided the means to share his music with us all.

    Musiq's Second Coming

Summer has proven to be the time for the neo-soul era to come full swing again. Jill Scott, bilal, and others all coming out with new material to keep us going for a good minute. Another artist sharing the spotlight again is Musiq. His new album Juslisen, shows us again what he is significantly good for:good music that is for the soul. Carrying on the same forte' he produced on his first cd,Musiq tackles on the issue of heart and soul. He goes from talking about the consequences of falling in love with close friends on ''halfcrazy'' to telling a girl that he is not like her past loves that hurt her on ''Previous Kats''. Although the cd is worth listening to, it seems that the material is overdrawn and closed to being used up in repetition. The remix to ifiwouldhaveknewthegirlnextdoor was not needed for this cd and so many songs but like I said same type of material. The cd is worth getting but in time he will come up with some new material to make it sound even greater.

    Back to Basiqs

Being a classic R&B/ Soul (Donny Hathaway, O'Jays, Stevie Wonder) fanatic, I was so disappointed over the years as R&b has gotten a bad rap. I remember when there used to be a lone category for R&B now it's combined with Hip Hop (which has gotten commercialized over the years) Not to knock what the new age artists are putting down, but if it wasn't for vocalists/songwriters like Musiq I'm sure I'd be on a mission one day to bring things back to basiqs. Finally, we're back to soulful ballads, with resonating sounds and deep, meaningful lyrics with people who can actually perform live. People slept on Musiq's first debut but I'm sure 'Juslisen' will perk your ears to do just that.

Musiq Blesses the World with Juslisen

a more mature musiq soulchild has delivered a masterful piece of work with juslisen. i purchased the album last friday, along with many other albums that have been given high praise. although i have listened to all of them, i have fallen in love with juslisen, and have played it through numerous times. his first single ''halfcrazy'' is a deep song with a distinctive beat, that i'm sure many guys (and girls) can relate to. his remake of the beatles classic ''something'' presents a brand new and refreshing look at the song. although i can listen through the entire cd without skipping a song (even the interludes are nice), and would give high praise to almost every track, the song that stands out for me is ''religious'' just listen to the song and you'll see what i mean. buy this cd.

    Who can hang with Musiq?

Not a 1. He did it again. Laid down the tightest vocals, with the mellow tone. Forget about him being on his way to stardom, in my book he is already there. Soulchild is truly bring music from the soul.

    Slamin Satisfaction!

The soulchilds debut album was off the hook! I expect nothing less on his 2nd LP. I was late picking up his first ablum but it has become one of my classic RB records. I will definately be rockin ''Juslisen'' on the 7th.

    *~:*~:MUSIQ:~*~* fan para siempre!!!

I thought the first cd was off the hook... ( I played that mugg on repeat for a month nonstop) MUSIQ definantly triumphs on this 2nd release... I'm feeling it even the more.. my favorite song on the cd is Previous Cats.... Ladies listen to the words and meld them into your hearts b/c not all fellas are dogs or cheaters and we cannot nor should we hold the new man in our lives accountable for past hurt... We can ask God to heal the wounds of the past.... and that is why I love this song.. b/c he's spittin the truth and the truth makes us free if we allow it too.........

    ''Musiq'' is good music

Wow. What can I say? This guy has something here. He's so different from a lot of others out there which is what draws me to his music. His lyrics are real and they sound great at the same time which is great. It's a pretty rare thing to have substance in music nowadays and he's got it. I respect him for that. Juslisen is a great album, i definitely reccomend you check it out...
