Hamming it up

She's a tiny, week-old orphan mini-pig who needs a mother - and Cory Dean, who's nearly twelve, is born for the job! "The trick here," says her mother the psychology professor, "is to think like a pig."

Pandora loves talking, bathing, peanut butter, jogging, riding in the car, junk food, and flushing the toilet. Soon she's a regular teenager, with a genius for mischief and a decidedly sneaky snout. Cory tries to control her pig-headed pet - even as she fights prejudice against pigs by the same neighbors who line up to buy Pandora's Products to spread on their gardens. It's not easy being a little ham. But it's even tougher being a pig's mother. What's Cory to do?

Gr 4-6-- Pandora may only be a mini-pig, but the changes her arrival brings to the Dean household are of hog-sized proportions. For 12-year-old Cory; her younger brother, Robert; and their widowed mother, life becomes a series of comic crises. Pandora is the latest in a long line of animal ``behavioral studies'' that psychology professor Amanda Dean delights in bringing home to her children. The little pig's disruptive antics provide the episodes which move the plot along, and the result is an amusing and appealing family story. Pig lore abounds as Pandora develops and displays unique talents, from toilet-flushing to providing Pandora's Products, the ``Real Thing'' in fertilizer. Cory at first rejects the idea of spending her summer vacation as top executive of ``Pig Poop, Inc.,'' but she soon realizes the money-making potential, and even acquires a boyfriend who helps out with her unusual deliveries. The characters are sympathetic and believable, and the humorous situations are handled with a light touch. --Martha Rosen, Edgewood Sch . , Scarsdale, NY
