All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The tenth volume of Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80's isn't as consistent as some, yet better than many others. In fact, it seems better than many of its peers because its best songs are fantastic. The tenth volume of Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80's isn't as consistent as some, yet better than many others. In fact, it seems better than many of its peers because its best songs are fantastic. And those are some timeless singles -- Adam Ant's "Desperate but Not Serious," the Human League's "Keep Feeling Fascination," the Jam's "Beat Surrender," Madness' sublime "Our House," Bananarama's "Shy Boy," Naked Eyes' "Promises, Promises," Nick Heyward's lovely "Whistle Down the Wind," and the Plimsouls' ubiquitous "A Million Miles Away." Still, the sequencing and the filler give the record less momentum than it should have had, even if it ends with Taco's unbelievable "Puttin' on the Ritz" first time this writer ever heard the song, and I have never thought about classic pop music the same way since. So, this is better than the average Just Can't Get Enough, which means it's miles better than the average new wave collection, but it still doesn't have enough momentum to make it worthwhile for anyone outside of dedicated new wave collectors.
