Overview

When Lily Sanderson decided to remain Crown Princess Waterlily of the mer kingdom of Thalassinia, she knew she couldn't just coast along in the current. But since she's spent the last couple of years on land, Lily's not sure she has the fins to lead a kingdom. Even her maddeningly pretentious cousin Dosinia seems to know more about ruling than she does.

But Lily has to dive in deep to keep her promise to Tellin, her mer bond in name only, who tells her his kingdom is suffering in the changing ocean climate. Lily knows this is a seven seas–sized problem. They'll need to create some serious waves to make the mer community aware and get it to join together to make things right. Lily has to lead the way, even if that means facing one of the iciest queens in the mer kingdoms.

Just when Lily thinks her double life on land and sea can't get any more complicated, an ancient mer law might separate Lily and her human boyfriend, Quince, after all. It feels as if the pair is up against a solid tsunami wave!

In this third installment in the series that began with Forgive My Fins and Fins Are Forever, Lily will have to find a way to balance safety and justice for the mer people and for the humans she loves.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kate Conklin
In the third book in the Fins series, half-human, half-mermaid Lily Sanderson is adjusting to life as Crown Princess Waterlily of Thalassinia. After bonding in name only with Prince Tellin of Acropora, she is determined to help save his dying kingdom. When Lily calls a meeting of the kings and queens of the Western Atlantic kingdoms to discuss Tellin's problems, she is embarrassed to discover her huge mistake. The other kingdoms are also suffering, due to pollution and ocean climate change. Lily must find a way to bring all of the rulers together in order to fight the extinction of the mer-people and avoid harm coming to humans. Meanwhile, her own romance with human boyfriend, Quince, is threatened by ancient mermaid laws that insist challenges be completed before their relationship can continue. Childs continues a series that brings eco-advocacy to the forefront in a mermaid teen romance. The plot is fairly predictable but progresses quickly. Characters from earlier books grow and develop in ways that readers will appreciate and might not expect. Fans of the series will be the most likely to enjoy this book, and it may not entice new readers of the series. Reviewer: Kate Conklin

    Magic Kingdom 1

Valerie opened her eyes, blinking tiredly. Her alarm clock hadn't gone off yet, so why did she wake up? Something was definitely wrong. Where was the ceiling? There were almost no lights at all, except from around her, not from her one butterfly night light. She stood, wobbling a bit, her feet firm on the rough concrete underfoot. Her vision finally cleared, and she smiled. Valerie Woods was standing outside the gate of Magic Kingdom, her holographic form flickering uncertainly. She had been coming here for two months now, once every two weeks, always on Friday night. But it was Sunday night, and Valerie had been afraid that the dream was gone for good. Some man named Ryder had explained that she was a Kingdom Keeper, although she was unsure of her purpose or what Kingdom she kept. He had said, "all will be explained next time." Well, here she was, but she couldn't spot Ryder anywhere. She began walking forward slowly, her holographic form passing right through the turnstiles. A buffeting breeze blew her wild, thick orange hair into her face, perfecting her flame imitation. "This way," a small voice directed. Valerie looked around quickly but couldn't spot anyone in the dim light of the park. "Where?--" she began. The voice cleared his throat and Valerie finally looked down at her feet. "Oh!" It was a cricket, a cricket dressed in a suit and a top hat. He was tapping his foot impatiently and she had to stifle a laugh. His appearence was kind off funny. "I'm Jimminy, Jimminy Cricket," he introduced himself. A memory flashed through Valerie. "Oh! I saw you on Pinochio!" She recalled, smiling. "Yes, but that is not important right now. Follow me, you have an important meeting to attend," he explained, setting of at a brisk trot. Valerie ran to catch up, curious. He led her under the railroad tracks, straight down Main Street, and to the entrance of the Castle. She paused to stare at the majestic structure, it always took her breath away. It was so early, yet it still glowed and turned every color of the rainbow. Jimminy motioned for her to enter, and took her down the hallway. Having been to Disney World with her family four times, she knew her way around quite well, and she loved seeing the familiar mosaics. They were constructed of colorful stones, jewels, and gold, dipicting happy endings from numurous Disney movies. They stopped before a large wooden door, and after a few seconds, it swung open with a mighty heave. Inside, Ryder and her friends were waiting. There was Elizabeth Goodall from Sacramento, California. She was ten and had dirty blond hair that reached to her shoulders and her deep brown eyes were niave and innocent. Maria Gianni was from Maine, and she was also ten. She and Elizabeth were already best friends. Her hair was straight and blonde and she had blue eyes, not nearly as pale as Valerie's though. Emmet Long came from Forks, Washington State. He had ashy blonde hair that hung in his face and clear green eyes. He and Ryan Debney were the only boys. Ryan had reddish brown hair and brown eyes. He was funny, with childish features and an easy going personality. "Ah, Valerie has arrived. We may start the meeting," the withered man known as Ryder stood, his voice cracking with age.
